Chinese scholar's rocks

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Chinese scholar's rocks, also known as scholar stones or viewing stones, are small shaped or naturally-occurring rocks appreciated by Chinese scholars from the Song dynasty onwards.

The best stones are often believed to come from Tai Hu, with the finest examples dating from the Ming dynasty. They influenced the development of Korean stone art, Japanese Suiseki and Confucian idealism; and were an important part of Confucian art.
