Chinese Martyrs
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Chinese Martyrs were 120 Christian missionaries and laypeople martyred in China during the 19th and 20th centuries. They were mostly Roman Catholics and Chinese, but many of them hailed from other countries as well. Those who died during the Boxer Rebellion in 1900 are called the Chinese New Martyrs. Pope John Paul II canonized them as saints on October 1, 2000. The Chinese Martyrs Catholic Church in Toronto, Ontario is named for them. The Orthodox Church recognizes its own martyrs from the Boxer Rebellion. The Russian Orthodox Church feels a special kinship with them, because most were Chinese converted by Russian missionaries.
