Chigger

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Chigger can refer to:

  • Either of two parasitic arthropods with similar behaviors:
    • the chigoe flea (Tunga penetrans), found in tropical climates
    • the larva of a harvest mite (aka scrub itch mite, red mite and numerous other names in a variety of languages). They are found throughout the temperate and tropical zones. Chiggers belong to the Order Acariformes, Superfamily Trombiculoidea and numerous genera have species that bite humans. One of the most important genera is Leptotrombidium, because its species are the primary vectors of the rickettsial disease scrub typhus.
The name originated as a corruption of chigoe, but the harvest mite is what is most commonly called a chigger in North America, due to its similar behavior.
