Chief Inspector/Acting Superintendent Derek Conway was a long-serving character in the TV series "The Bill". Conway was considered by many to be a model boss: hard-working, competent and respected by everyone who worked for him.
Highlights from Conway's career include the time he persuaded a mentally unhinged man not to torch a house belonging to his former wife. He also served as Acting Superintendent for two years taking command of Sun Hill Police station.
Tragically, he was the victim of a car bomb attack which killed him instantly. He is sorely missed by his widow and children. Due to the real-life rank of Chief Inspector being a mostly desk-bound job, The Bill made the decision to retire the rank of Chief Inspector as well as the character. A memorial fund was organised for Conway.
Conway was played by Ben Roberts.
