Chickmagalur, meaning 'Town of the younger daughter', is a beautiful town located in the foothills of Bababudangiri range in the Indian state of Karnataka. The town is known for its coffee and tea estates.
The scenic hill station of Kemmangundi is about two hours away from Chickmagalur. In the early 1980's, Indira Gandhi contested for elections from Chikmagalur and won by a huge margin. It was then that the town gained popularity. Hiremagalur, meaning 'Town of the elder daughter', is about 5 km away from Chikmagalur. This village boast of a unique temple of Lord Rama. It is common folklore that when Parashurama met Lord Rama he asked to see him in the pose when he got married to Sita. Thus it is said that the temple at Hiremagalur has the positions of Lakshmana and Sita interchanged. Chickmagalur is also known for Coffee, Hot Coffee and cold weather of Chickmagalur is famous worldwide. Chickmagalur is good competator of Brazil in Coffee Plantation. Mullayangiri is a hill situated in Chickamagalur, which is the highest mountain in south India. It is believed that this mountain was formed when Lord Hanumman was taking Sanjivini to save Laxmana's life, a part of that mountain fell on this area which is called as Mullayanagiri. Now this mountain has become a trekking place for many adventure and environment lovers. Kallathgiri is a chilling water fall, where you can find the water chiller than ice water even in summer season. Great thing about this is, no one know the source of this water, even many tried to find out this secret but they are unable to dig the secret. Sithalayanngiri is a hill near Chickmagalur, which is famous as a best sunset view point.There are many resorts and estates around this area. Around 40% of Kannada films have been shot in Chickmagalur, The main reason is the beautiful scenery of the place.
