Chicago White Stockings
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Chicago White Stockings was the original name of two professional baseball teams that have played in Chicago, Illinois:
- Chicago's first professional club, established 1870, played in the National Association for the 1871 season, resumed play in 1874-75 after the Great Chicago Fire, and joined (actually initiated) the National League in 1876. Called the White Stockings through 1889, it is now the Chicago Cubs.
- The American League team now known as Chicago White Sox entered Chicago in 1900 and adopted the old name of its crosstown competitor. It was shortened a few years later, perhaps by reporters or headline writers.
