Talk:Cheryl Gallant
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Isn't she known for her bad behaviour in the House? (swearing, etc.)? -- stewacide
- Yes, but her constituents love her for that...if you ever take a trip into the Ottawa Valley and her riding, you'd think you were in Mississippi or Alabama...
I don't think I would go so far as to compare the Ottawa Valley to Mississippi or Alabama but there are a lot of people here with some pretty strong convictions on certain issues. This riding has one of the largest percentages of seniors of any riding in Ontario. These are the people who vote for her because her views represent their views on a lot of issues. But everyone in the riding is embarassed when she talks first and thinks later.
The edit about there being rumours that her party might try to find a replacement for her is complete and utter nonsense that most likely was placed here by someone with an agenda. I know this information is false from first hand sources, but of course, I can't put that down because we should cite sources here. For "rumours" to be placed here, they should be DOCUMENTED.
If Hec Clouthier would have run as an Independent like he was thinking about doing, he would have had my vote in a minute. But he has decided not to run and the only thing I'm sure of is that I WON'T be voting for Cheryl Gallant. She's got too many radical ideas for my liking.
Anyone who refers to the Ottawa Valley to Mississippi or Alabama is either talking to the wrong people or ignorant. This riding is not that socially conservative considering the population made up of a lot of hunters and military members. Take a trip there or live there and you will find a lot of people there who are not voting for the Conservatives necessarily but against the Liberals. Len Hopkins and Sean Conway, both Liberals, represented this riding for decades. By and large the votes depend on one thing, military spending. Historically the Liberals spent more on the military and as such they were voted in longer, once that trend reversed we get more Conservatives in power. So much of the economy in Petawawa-Pembroke depends on the military that it is a natural. Also, Hec Clouthier shot himself in the foot big time with the gun control issue. People looked for the next best alternative other than voting for Clouthier, and the effects of that are still lingering today for the Liberals in this riding.
Not every runour can be documented with a CPAC or CTV reference, but is in fact widely known that high ranking Conservative members have in fact been poking around the riding for a replacement candidate. In fact, the last I heard was that the mayor of renfrew was asked about her interest level. I know Gallant supporters would like to consider this some outlandish rumour, however even conservative party hacks in Ottawa, some of them I work with in Ottawa, claim that the party no longer wants her around, but at the same time wants to keep the riding. She has done nothing but hurt the CP nationally so it is no wonder they would want her gone if they found a reasonable candidate that would hold the riding

I'm sorry but rumours and gossip don't belong on wikipedia. Homey 05:46, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
And yet they allow thing such as the homosexual rumours that are found in Bill Graham's article... way to be consistent! Maybe I should start a 2 cent magazine so that I can quote myself. If you rnot going to allow very well known rumours, then don't allow them. But be consistent!

- Bill Graham's bisexuality was reported in a Globe and Mail profile of the politician a few years ago. This story about Gallant sending birthday cards hasn't hit the major media which should give you some indication of how trivial it is. If it hits the Ottawa Citizen or Ottawa Sun try again. Right now you're grasping at straws which I think you know since you're consistently omitting any reference to the birthday card (perhaps you realise that that rather central piece of information has the effect of trivialising the allegation?) [edit] Cheryl Gallant's ethnicity?
Since Gallant is a common Acadian surname (especially associated with the history of Prince Edward Island, although it can be found in other parts of Canada and the United States), I would like to know whether Ms. Gallant uses her maiden name or her married name. If Gallant is her maiden name, that would presumably make her Franco-Ontarian. If Gallant is her married name (cf. the author Mavis Gallant, who uses her ex-husband's surname), I would like to know her ethnic background.
Many thanks. — Diamantina (née Mlle Gallant de Californie) 08:39, 3 March 2006 (UTC)
Gallant is her married name. She goes by Mrs. Gallant, and her husband's name is Jamie Gallant.

[edit] vandalism
I think it is quite clear that the individual with the IP address: 67.71.80.109 is nothing more than a vandal seeking to abuse the website. For the best interests of the wikipedia community, the person should be banned from this particular article. This individual has also indicated that he/she:
1. Works in a politically sensitive job in Ottawa 2. Claims to be in contact with high-ranking conservative strategists as well as a town mayor 3. Has a negative bias towards certain polititians mentioned in this article
There is nothing wrong with having an opinion, but wikipedia is a place for people to strive towards having journalistic integrity. Perhaps if this individual could state his/her sources and/or provide a user page with contact information, then we can have his/her contributions added to the article permanantly.
[edit] Unsubstantiated claims
Just for the record, I can say right now that this talk about me spreading rumours about certain local Renfrew County polititians is completely false. I do not want to have someone putting words in my mouth. If there is any more of this, I will complain to local authorities.
I believe what was written, and I quote, was "the last I heard was that the mayor of renfrew was asked about her interest level." This clearly does not mention who the person spreading the rumour was, but it definitely does not suggest that the Mayor of Renfrew herself is in anyway the person spreading the rumour. I think we should be careful of making legal threats, especially when the threats do not match what was said.
- No legal threats. --Woohookitty(cat scratches) 13:05, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Twice the votes
I'm altering that line to reflect that it's factually wrong as it stands (as she did not garner more than twice as many votes as the next nearest candidate). FireWorks 23:51, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] 2006 election
Well Cheryl Gallant has pulled it off again. For whatever reason, (eg Lindsays' WW2 vet insult, the national campaign, a stronger volunteer team, etc.), Cheryl has substantially increased her vote from the last election, biting heavily into the Liberal vote, while the Green and NDP candidates pick up a fes votes (http://www.cbc.ca/canadavotes/riding/181/). Not only did she keep her riding intact, and not only did she keep the 55 percent she had in the last election, she somehow managed to increase her vote by ANOTHER 3000 VOTES. I swear, she is a magician. As long as she keeps the main issues of renfrew county at the forefront, she can do no wrong. Seriously, HOW DOES SHE DO IT???
[edit] Citations and Speculations
Citations on this page have been spotty: some do not back up the assertions they are linked to, and other do not exist or must be purchased. I have edited to reflect the content of the citations, as well as to remove the speculations on why people voted this way or that. Without statistical analysis and empirical methods, this is just hearsay, not worthy of an encyclopedia. --Thes entinel 00:55, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
