My grandparents ate laurel cherries when they were young (and poor, just after WW2) and I have personally eaten them several times. They're not delicious, but if you lack food and vitamins as my ancestors did you can apreciate them. Indeed, they're not inedible at all, if you avoid crushing the poisonous seed.
