Chettinad Vidyashram is a private school which was founded by Dr Meena Muthiah in 1986. The school is located in the R.A Puram area in the city of Chennai.

The school enrolls children from kindergarten to high school. It is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education, India. The medium of instruction at Chettinad Vidyashram is English, and two other languages from Hindi, Tamil, Sanskrit or French is mandatory. As of the year 2000, the school had a strength of 5487 students[1].

In 1986, Dr Meena Muthiah, founded the school with a motivation "to start an educational centre, combining the virtues of a Temple of Art and Culture - a dedicated school that blends discipline with freedom, endeavouring to raise the integrated child" [2]

The aim of the school is "to tie up with the past in art, tradition and culture in all its purity and variety and to lead the younger generation into the future through methodical dissemination of scientific knowledge."[3]

The motto of the school is the the golden mean. The school claims to strive "for discipline without distaste and for freedom within limits"[2].

The school is set amidst natural surroundings. It has a well-equipped library, science, mathematics, language laboratories and two audio-visual theatres with multi-media projection systems. [4]. Apart from academics, the school also offers specilized training in various extra-curricular activities.

The school has a various recreational facilities, including swimming pool and the facilities to play Tennis, Cricket, Basketball, Chess, Gymnastics, Table Tennis and Volleyball. The school also has mandatory coaching in Arts, Music and Dance up to primary school level.

The school has a NCC and Girl Guides wing, which "aims to develop qualities of character, courage and leadership".

The school also has swimming pools for children of different age groups.

The school, which was represented by students Siddharth Srinivasan and Karthik Dass, was the first from South India to win the prestigious Bournvita Quiz contest in the year 2000 Rohini Rau, an alumnus of the school won the gold at the Asian Sailing Championships in Mumbai in 2004.
Another alumnus Saindhavi, is a playback singer and has received an award from our President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

Its present quiz team has also brought in many laurels for the school. Nitish Krishna,Sailesh Krishna and Gautham Srinivas of the school have won the prestigious "Best School Team Award" at the Landmark Quiz 2006 and in many other quizzes.They have also won the The Hindu Young World Quiz 2006.

Sailesh also recieved Rs.42,500 for participating in 'India's child genius' hosted by Siddhartha Basu.He was 3rd in the south zone and reached the national semi-finals.He was the youngest participant in the contest.

The athletics team of the school has also been doing well and it has participated in many competitions.

The school's girls basketball team is ranked 2nd in India. In the football team Gautham Krishnan was selected for Tamilnadu state.Another alumnus, Naveen C, is a successful cricket player and represents Tamil Nadu.Prashanth B has also been selected to play for the state.

The school also has its own theatre group called "Chettinad Players" which has staged plays such as "Karna:The Eternal Warrior" and staged "Vaali Vadham" in 2006 as a part of its annual public show, directed by Mr.Jayakumar. [5].
