Chetopa is a city in Labette County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,281 at the 2000 census.

(37.037452, -95.091892)According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.5 km² (1.4 mi²). 3.3 km² (1.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (6.62%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 1,281 people, 560 households, and 341 families residing in the city. The population density was 389.4/km² (1,004.9/mi²). There were 651 housing units at an average density of 197.9/km² (510.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 89.15% White, 2.26% African American, 6.32% Native American, 0.08% from other races, and 2.19% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.01% of the population.
There were 560 households out of which 24.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.1% were married couples living together, 9.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.1% were non-families. 35.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.22 and the average family size was 2.85.
In the city the population was spread out with 22.3% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 22.6% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 23.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 90.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $23,250, and the median income for a family was $29,338. Males had a median income of $24,479 versus $19,231 for females. The per capita income for the city was $11,705. About 13.1% of families and 18.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 29.3% of those under age 18 and 15.7% of those age 65 or over.
