Chesterfield railway station is a medium-sized railway station, 20 km (12 miles) south of Sheffield Midland station and to the east of Chesterfield town centre (Derbyshire). Four tracks go through it: two fast lines (for all passenger trains) pass through the station and two goods lines next to it..

[edit] Platforms and Destinations

The fast lines have two large sideplatforms - one for each direction. The goods lines do not have platforms and pass around the rear of platform 2. Of these platforms, platform 1 is for northbound trains towards Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, York, Newcastle and Edinburgh. Platform 2 is for southbound trains towards Nottingham, Peterborough, Norwich, Derby, Leicester, London, Birmingham and Bristol. The platforms are covered for around half their length.

[edit] Ownership

This station is owned by Network Rail, but is run by Midland Mainline, which operates trains between Sheffield and London St Pancras and is part of the National Express Group. Midland Mainline extensively rebuilt the station shortly after taking it over from British Rail.

[edit] Entrance

The entrance is on Crow Lane and includes a car park, taxi rank and bus stop. There is also a small car park on the other side of Crow Lane which does not have a parking charge. The entrance has direct access to platform 1 via the concourse. Platform 2 is accessed via a tunnel which can be accessed by stairs or a lift, in the concourse and next to the platform 2 waiting room.

The concourse is very spacious and was built in the late 90s. It includes a ticket office, a newsagent, a café and a waiting room. The concourse and the waiting room both have direct access to platform 1. There is also a waiting room on platform 2, which is accessed via the stairs or lift in the concourse.

The first line into Chesterfield was the North Midland Railway from Derby to Leeds in 1840. The original station was built in a Jacobean style similar to the one at Ambergate but it was replaced in 1870 by a new one further north, when the Midland Railway built the new road to Sheffield.

In 1893 the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway, later taken over by the Great Central Railway, crossed under the North Midland line half a mile south, at Horns Bridge, to a station a few yards west. in 1897, the Lancashire, Derbyshire and East Coast Railway arrived, with a viaduct seven hundred feet long, above both lines, with a station at the Market Place.

The Great Central station closed in 1963 and was demolished in 1973 to make way for the town's inner relief road. The line into Market Place station closed in 1951 due to problems in Bolsover Tunnel, the station building was demolished in the 1970s. The Midland station was demolished and rebuilt in 1963. Most of the buildings from 1963 were demolished in the late 90s, shortly after privatisation and most of the buildings on site now date from then.
