Chesilhurst is a Borough in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. As of the United States 2000 Census, the borough population was 1,520.

Chesilhurst is located at 39°43′54″N, 74°52′34″W (39.731549, -74.876067)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 4.5 km² (1.7 mi²), all land.

Chesilhurst borders Waterford and Winslow.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 1,520 people, 493 households, and 345 families residing in the borough. The population density was 341.2/km² (885.8/mi²). There were 535 housing units at an average density of 120.1/km² (311.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough was 37.37% White, 55.99% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 2.89% from other races, and 3.22% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.08% of the population.

There were 493 households out of which 26.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.5% were married couples living together, 18.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.0% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.81 and the average family size was 3.32.

In the borough the population was spread out with 22.9% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 30.0% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 100.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.6 males.

The median income for a household in the borough was $41,786, and the median income for a family was $50,263. Males had a median income of $33,333 versus $28,500 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $15,252. About 8.0% of families and 15.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.0% of those under age 18 and 10.3% of those age 65 or over.

Chesilhurst is in the First Congressional District and is part of New Jersey's 6th Legislative District.[1]

New Jersey's First Congressional District, covering portions of Burlington County, Camden County and Gloucester County, is represented by Rob Andrews (D, Haddon Heights). New Jersey is represented in the Senate by Frank Lautenberg (D, Cliffside Park) and Robert Menendez (D, Hoboken).

The 6th Legislative District of the New Jersey Legislature is represented in the State Senate by John H. Adler (D, Cherry Hill) and in the Assembly by Louis Greenwald (D, Voorhees) and Pamela Rosen Lampitt (D, Cherry Hill). The Governor of New Jersey is Jon Corzine (D, Hoboken).

Camden County is governed by a seven-member Board of Chosen Freeholders. Camden County's Freeholders are: Louis Cappelli, Jr. (Freeholder Director), Edward McDonnell (Freeholder Deputy Director), Riletta L. Cream, Thomas J. Gurick, Jeffrey L. Nash, Joseph Ripa and Carmen Rodriguez.

The Shirley B. Foster Elementary School serves students in grades Pre-K thru 6 as the lone school of the Chesilhurst Borough School District. Shirley B. Foster School is comprised of 134 students, 17 faculty members and 13 support personnel.

Students in seventh through twelfth grade attend the schools of the Winslow Township School District as part of a sending/receiving relationship. Students attend Winslow Township Middle School for grades 7 and 8, and Winslow Township High School [1] for grades 9-12.
