[edit] Day 4
During Day 4, Cheng was director of security for the Los Angeles Chinese Consulate building when Lee Jong, a Chinese scientist working for Habib Marwan, took refuge in the facility, having been warned by Marwan that CTU would be looking for him and alternatively, as he feared Marwan would attempt to kill him to prevent him revealing any information to CTU. CTU initially attempted to convince the Consulate officials to turn Lee over through diplomatic means. Though the Consul sympathized with their situation, he felt there was not enough evidence to connect Lee to the terrorist plot. With time running out, Jack Bauer led a covert raid into the Consulate to capture Lee. The raid went wrong, however, as Lee was wounded and the Consul was killed by friendly fire. Dissastisfied with the explanation provided by CTU, Cheng launched his own investigation into the attack. He illegally abducted a member of Jack's strike team, who revealed that Jack led the raid. Cheng then demanded that President Charles Logan hand Jack over to stand trial. Logan's head of security Walt Cummings, concerned about a government agent with Jack's knowledge falling into Chinese hands, secretly arranged Jack's elimination (with Logan's unspoken approval), prompting Jack to fake his death.
[edit] Day 5
18 months later, Cheng discovered that Jack was still alive (possibly through Logan or Graham), and the fifth season ended with Cheng orchestrating Jack's abduction. As they head back on a container ship to China, Jack begs Cheng to simply kill him. Cheng, however, tells Jack that he is "too valuable to kill".
[edit] Prior to Day 6
As depicted in the Day 6 prequel, the Chinese proceeded to interrogate and torture Jack for the next seven months under Cheng's supervision. The Chinese were aware that one of two men working in the government, Lee or Hong, was a spy working for the United States, but did not know which, and despite continued torture, Jack would not divulge the information.
One night, two Americans rescued Jack from his cell and transported him to a rendez-vous point, where Hong Wai was waiting. It turned out the "rescue" had been staged by the Cheng himself and Bauer's recognition had exposed Hong, who Cheng immediately shot and killed. Cheng then ordered his men to take Bauer back to his cell. [1] [2]
[edit] Day 6
According to the Season 6 trailer (http://www.24trailer.com), he will return with Jack back to Los Angeles, as part of an exchange that puts Jack back in CTU custody. Cheng's view of Jack has been changed by this time, as in a promo aired during the World Series, Cheng says "Mr. Bauer is no longer China's enemy."
