Chelyabinsk Metro is an underground rapid transit system in Chelyabinsk, Russia, projected since 1960s and under construction since 1993.

The first three stations were scheduled to open in 2007, but this was postponed to 2010, and now the construction company requested to postpone it even further to 2012. One more station is scheduled to open one or two years later after this.

[edit] Lines and stations

The current plans include opening three stations and the depot by 2010. The three stations will be:

  • Komsomolskaya ploshchad (Komsomol Square)
  • Ploshchad revolyutsiyi (Revolution Square)
  • Torgovyi tsentr (Trade Center)

The total length of tunnels will be 3,5 km, plus 1 km track to the depot.

Further plans include expanding the first line east to Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant (one station), and west (4 stations) by 2018.

Then, two more lines running from north to south-east and from north-east to south-west are planned.

[edit] Criticism

The project was postponed several times due to lack of financing, though initially thought to be completed by 2000.

The plan of development was developed many years ago and since the city has expanded and the transport needs have changed greatly, the initial three stations will be hardly of any help to reducing traffic congestion and improving transportation system.

The alternative projects which could have suited better this not so large a city, such as metrotram or trains above the ground were rejected.
