[edit] Welcome

Hello, Chanakyathegreat, and welcome to Wikipedia! I am Deepu Joseph (a.k.a. thunderboltz). Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

[edit] Hello

Hi! I was a bit busy these days and could get time to reply to your message only now. Good to know that you are slowly progressing on the path to becoming a wikiholic. ;-)
It is very important to gather a consensus before making any major changes. This actually encourages only verified information to get into wikipedia. And discerning the correct info from rumors and vandalism can indeed be a tiring job.
The Indian Coast Guard page seems to doing quite fine to me. Perhaps you forgot to type the correct case (note that the first letters are all caps) — Wikipedia is case sensitive.
Everything's going fine here in Kochi. (Are you from this part of the world?) Achu mamas doing great work. He has already sent back the Dubai Internet city people who were planning to invest half a million crores in Kochi. And now he's working real hard to get me out of college (and reserve all the colleges in the state for OBCs). Oh well, life goes on.... -- thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu Joseph |TALK16:10, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

Haha. And a note to anybody watching this convo: The above comments do not specify my political orientation, but my views on politics itself. :P
Happy editing!-- thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu Joseph |TALK14:45, 5 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Assistance

Hi, noticed you were editing Indian Navy articles and wanted you to have Atlantique Incident in your watchlist since a certain biased Pakistani seems keen to remove whatever I have to add to it though I've provided sources. I'm hoping you can aid me in keeping the article free of bias since he is likely to revert any edit of mine and impose his POVs. Tx --Idleguy 06:40, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] License tagging for Image:Bmkhdw05(small).jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Bmkhdw05(small).jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 13:04, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Blue-water navies

Hey, how are you? I just wanted to let you know that I am in full agreement with you regarding the status of the Spanish Navy. It is not a blue-water navy at all and the people who insist on that label have serious misconceptions. Thank you for your work. I have removed the Spanish from the list of blue navies.UberCryxic 18:56, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Yeah I am fine with adding Spain on the potential blue-water section, as long as Italy is added there as well. I am a little shocked that the Spanish Navy has been regarded so highly in the conversations you guys had. Spain has a good, even great, navy, but to hear some of those people talking you'd think they had the best navy in the world.UberCryxic 14:02, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Unfortunately I do not know much about the South Korean Navy, but I am aware that their strategic doctrine is undergoing major shifts. In terms of gross tonnage, they don't seem like a potential blue-water navy (one French Triomphant class submarine is larger than South Korea's ENTIRE submarine fleet), so I'd be willing to support you from that angle.UberCryxic 16:14, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Hey, I'm in the process now of acquiring sources and making a comprehensive case for why the Spanish Navy should not be considered as a blue-water navy. Until then, can you keep a track on Marneus and revert his vandalism if necessary? If he violates 3RR, which he already has, then please report him here. Thank you!UberCryxic 00:30, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] hindi letters in indian air force page

hi chanakya, any particular reason you are deleting the hindi letters from the indian air force page? many iaf aircraft carry the letters and i think it is appropriate to leave them on the page

regards iafguru 13:33, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

well Hindi is afterall the official language of the National government in India. and as i said before, there are lot of IAF aircraft that carry the hindi words and not sanskrit or malyalam. i think it is appropriate to leave the hindi letters in the page.

[edit] Image:INS Mumbai.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:INS Mumbai.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a free image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Megapixie 12:11, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] FN Charles de Gaulle

Please help me with a WIKI arbitration on the India-Pakistan section of FN CHarles de Gaulle. There is a user who keep on reverting to claims that are (in my opinion) not WIKI rules. Please arbitrate. I do not know how to call for an arbitration. Thanks.

There is a Straw Poll on this subject, can you kindly participate ? Also, if you have some other persons who can come and take the poll for unbiased opinions and comments please feel free to pass the word around. Thanks a lot. Natobxl

[edit] Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Indian Navy

I noticed that you recently attempted to list Indian navy at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates. Unfortunately the transclusion page you added is currently a redirect to a previous nomination. To fix this problem you need to do the following:

  1. Go to Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Indian Navy. To do this follow the link to the page. As the page is currently a redirect, you will be automatically sent to the old nomination. Near the top left of the page there will be a link back to the redirect - Look for the "(Redirected for ..." line. Following this second link will allow you to access the redirect.
  2. Edit the redirect to have ===[[Indian Navy]]=== at the top of the page followed by your reason for nominating the article. It is also traditional to include a link to the previous nomination in your reasons. Upon saving the edit the redirect will be replaced by the new nomination.

Good luck with your nomination. --Allen3 talk 17:52, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] I have tagged a number of your other images uploads ...

With replaceable fair use. In several cases we already had free images in the articles.

  • Image:INS Tabar.jpg (Replaceable fairuse.) (top)
  • Image:INS Aditya Indian navy.jpg (Orphanfairuse.) (top)
  • Image:ALH Dhruv Helicopter.jpg (We already have better free images of this helicopter - why do we need fairuse ones ?) (top)
  • Image:Indian destroyer weapon.gif (Orphanfairuse.) (top)
  • Image:Indian-U.S navy Malabar.gif (Orphan'd fair use.) (top)
  • Image:TU-142.gif (Replaceable fair use we already have free images of TU-144 see TU-144) (top)
  • Image:INS DELHI FARING1.jpg (Replaceable fair use.) (top)

Please read WP:Fairuse before tagging any more images as fairuse. Fairuse should only be used for unique unreproducable images - i.e. paintings, films, statues, and unique historic events i.e. Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima, etc. By using fair use images where we could possibly could use free images we are discouraging people from producing free images (i.e. why bother? if we can use a fair use image). Megapixie 13:06, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

You don't understand fair use - please read Wikipedia:Fair use#Policy in particular criteria 1, which states that no free image could be created. All these things, ships, helicopters, etc exist - and thus could be photographed, and thus are replaceable fair use. By removing the fair use images, we encourage people to go out and create free images of the objects. Megapixie 14:47, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
The first sentence is the most important in this case: "No free equivalent is available or could be created that would adequately give the same information.". The ships / helicopters exist - it's reasonable that someone could take a photo of them - people have already taken photos of some of the other ships. This isn't a guideline. This isn't an essay. This is policy. Megapixie 23:18, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Reinstated the Incidents and Accicents section

This is in my opinion as important a section as the exercises & future plans section. It gives a brief non-biased write-up of the events. Also, do see IN discussion page. Natobxl 12:32, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

Please refer to IN discussion page for comments Natobxl 14:27, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:INS Shankul.gif. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. 1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject or by taking a picture of it yourself.

[edit] India as an emerging superpower

Thank-you for your work but know that you have to add a source or reference for every single line you add to that article. It's a very controversial article and lack of sources makes it innacurate. I will give you two days to cite your sources for the ICBM stuff or I will have to delete it. Nobleeagle [TALK] [C] 06:51, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Indian Navy

Thought I should explain a bit what I meant about reference books being used in the Indian Navy article. I didn't just mean adding links to books mentioned on the internet at the bottom, I meant getting hold of a number of books (the history section could use some more references), and adding info from them. I've recently gotten an article - Russian Ground Forces - to 'A' class by this method. Hope that helps. Cheers from New Zealand!! Buckshot06 09:26, 17 November 2006 (UTC)

Glad you found that helpful. I'm quite happy to help if I can, but here in New Zealand I don't have the Indian Official Histories and so on that you probably can get hold of. Actually one thought - I think orbat.com in some way was reproducing the unpublished Indian Official History for one of the Indo-Pakistani wars. Also, a good example naval article is Axis naval activity in Australian waters where the referencing is very good. Cheers Buckshot06 20:49, 17 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:MARCOS.gif)

Thanks for uploading Image:MARCOS.gif. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image is unlicensed for use on Wikipedia and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. [edit] Your GA nomination of Indian Navy

The article Indian Navy you nominated as a good article has failed , see Talk:Indian Navy for reasons why the nomination failed. If or when these points have been taken care of, you may apply for a new nomination of said article. If you oppose this decision, you may ask for a review. Chrisfow 13:04, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Citation

I've given up. I couldnt find any references of such a US Congress report. Like I said earlier, it might be a good idea to search the article's history and see who actually added the information. If it is a registered user, that makes our task easy. By the way, you've been doing a good job on the Indian Navy article. Many editors like Nirav, Saravask, Nichalp and Sundar (to mention a few) are good at copyediting. It might be a wise idea to ping them and request a quick copyedit. A good copyediting can better its chances at GA and FAC. Regards,--thunderboltz(Deepu) 13:10, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

Regards to copyright:
Images found on websites like *.nic.in are copyrighted by the Indian Government under the Indian Copyright Law. The absence of a copyright tag cannot be taken as a cue that the image is in public domain. The United States copyright law contains special provisions, that declare all government material into public domain. However the Indian copyright law lacks any such clause. However, these info and images can be used after 60 years since the day of publishing, as by then the copyright would have expired.
Copyrighted images (such as those from NIC sites) can be allowed restrictively on wikipedia if they satisfy some of these fair use criteria. See if any of your images fit into these.--thunderboltz(Deepu) 10:11, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Indian Navy

Hi, Chanakya. I'll be glad to give a full copyedit on Saturday. Also, I hope you noticed how the military section was merged into the new "Military and foreign affairs" section, similar to how other FA country articles like Australia do it. It was also moved up towards the top. Thanks. Saravask 04:25, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

Chanakya, I disagree. No other country FA on Wikipedia (Australia, Pakistan, Belgium, Bangladesh, South Africa, Canada, etc.) chunks out a section just for the military. Having a "foreign relations and the military" section like that in the Australia or Canada articles is a good compromise. If you still disagree, feel free to raise the issue at Talk:India. But I suspect that, based on comments by Nichalp, Blnguyen, Fowler, etc., consensus will come down against a specific military section. You should still seek inputs from them on Indian Navy, though. Regards. Saravask 05:30, 3 December 2006 (UTC)
