Chatra is a city and a municipality and headquarter of Chatra district in the state of Jharkhand, India.

Over the ages, Chatra has been considered a gateway to Jharkhand, particularly to Chota Nagpur Plateau. It is bounded on the north by Gaya and Hazaribagh districts, on the east by Hazaribagh district, on the south by Palamu and Ranchi districts and on the west by Gaya and Palamu districts.
Although Chatra has a long historical past, tracing its history to Magadha period, the modern Chatra came into being in 1991, after carving out a portion from Hazaribagh district.

Chatra is located at [1]. It has an average elevation of 427 metres (1400 feet). Chatra covers an area of 3706 square kilometers.

As of 2001 India censusGRIndia, Chatra had a population of 41,990. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Chatra has an average literacy rate of 65%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with male literacy of 71% and female literacy of 58%. 17% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Around 60% of Chatra district is covered by thick forests and it is home to a variety of flora and fauna.
