Château Prieuré-Lichine, originally Château Cantenac-Prieuré is a Fourth Growth in the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855, making it one of the most prestigious in France. Its vineyards consist of about 170 acres planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (52 percent), Merlot (31 percent), Cabernet Franc (12 percent) and Petit Verdot (five percent). After fermenting in concrete and stainless steel vats, the wine is aged for 18-24 months in 50 percent new oak barrels.
In 1951, the estate was purchased by the late wine writer and authority Alexis Lichine, who served as a taster in the historic Paris Wine Tasting of 1976 as well as in the earlier New York Wine Tasting of 1973. At the same time, Lichine and a syndicate purchased the Second Growth Margaux estate Château Lascombes, The estate is currently owned by the Ballande corporation.
