Chas Magic

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Chas Magic (original Dutch title 'Magisch Coos') was the name of a Dutch television programme created in the late 1960s by the studio Televisie Bergen Groep (Bergen Television Group). It ran for only one season in 1968. The comedy centred around a young man named 'Coos', translated as 'Chas' for English-speaking audiences, and the various exploits surrounding his quest for love. The object of his affections is the beautiful 'Emma', and in each episode he would formulate a plot to gain her love, which would undoubtedly go awry.

Coos was an uptight man who lived in the town of Bregtdorp, with his parents and sister. He was often accompanied by his childhood friends 'Radboud', Robert in English translations, and 'Blauw', literally meaning 'Blue', who helped him formulate his outrageous plans. Blauw was a comedic character, who could be compared with a character like The Fonz, of Happy Days fame.

Throughout the show's eight-episode span, Chas was alas unable to gain the love of Emma, and had the show been granted a second season viewers may have been granted the happy ending that never arrived. The only known recordings of the show were lost sometime during the 1970s, and the show has not been seen since, although several audio recordings were discovered recently, and have been broadcast on the internet. The show itself has been all but forgotten.

[edit] Trivia

  • Coos' sister was actually played by three separate actresses over the period of only eight episodes.
  • An actor, Nicholas Goodrich, who played a homeless man in episode four, was a known alcoholic. On the day of the taping, he arrived on set drunk. His condition was revealed when he vomited in the middle of a scene, but surprisingly the footage was still included in the episode.
  • Nicholas Goodrich was later nominated for a Dutch Television Award for his performance.
