The Charlotte County Redfish is a future team of the South Coast League, to be based in Port Charlotte, Florida. The team will not be affilitated with Major or Minor League Baseball. They will play at the Charlotte Sports Park, starting in the 2007 season.[1]
The name "Redfish" refers to the redfish that is native to Florida's Gulf Coast waters. The name also appeals to both Charlotte and Port Charlotte high schools as the fish theme is related to the Charlotte High School Tarpons, but uses the red color of Port Charlotte High School.[2]
[edit] History
Before the Charlotte County Baseball Team, Port Charlotte was the home of the Charlotte Rangers, an affiliate of the Texas Rangers. The city of Port Charlotte was the spring training home for the Texas Rangers team itself until they decided to move to Arizona after the March of 2002.
The Charlotte County Redfish will occupy Charlotte Sports Park beginning in the 2007 season.
