[edit] Background
The younger sons of Thomas Wilson, owner of Thomas Wilson & Son Ltd. along with eldest son David, they would eventually be brought into the family business of shipping and go on to succeed their father in running it. The firm was initially a wider joint venture, but Thomas became the sole owner and brought eldest son David into the firm as a virtually silent partner. When Charles and Arthur joined the firm became Thomas Wilson & Sons Ltd. and they would be given a joint half ownership to Thomas's whole half to ensure they would continue the family name through the business. They dissolved the partnership structure and restarted the business as a Private Limited Company in 1891, Thomas Wilson Sons & Co. By the mid 1890's the business was facing common problems of third-generational management in family firms and an outside Managing Director was brought into the firm, Oswald Sanderson.
[edit] Later Years
Under their clever management the firm flourished, becoming a major force in World shipping, and owning other business such as Earle's Shipbuilding firm and founding the Wilson North Eastern Railway Shipping Company with North Eastern Railway. Both became prominent figures in society, with political positions and titles and were highly regarded by the people of Hull for all they had done for the city. Though the business would continue for many years after their passing, it never quite achieved the same sort of success and was eventually sold off to Sir John Ellerman.
