Charles Xavier Thomas de Colmar (1785-1870) designed and patented the Arithmometer, in 1820. It was the first successful mechanical calculator that could add, subtract, and multiply. It could divide with some user intervention. Using some previous principles from other calculators, Thomas’s calculator is the most reliable calculator yet and sells for ninety years. The Arithmometer was very large and would occupy and entire desk. Thomas was important for the advancement of the calculator and early computers.
