Born 17 Mar, 1835. He came from Hadley and was the son of Cecil Monro (1803-78) of Hadley, the Senior Register of the High Court of Chancery for many years. His mother was Elizabeth (died 1883), a daughter of Lieut-Col. Henry Knight(-Erskine) of Pittodrie. His grandfather was Dr John Monro of Bedlam Hospital fame.
He was educated at Harrow (he was Monitor in 1853) and then Caius College, Cambridge where he graduated as BA and was eighth Classic in his year. He went on to become a Fellow of Caius College in 1857 before training as a barrister.
Charles Monro subsequently left law practice and returned to Caius College as a lecturer. He was appointed a member of the Syndicate of Modern Languages in the University, being a good linguist.
He is best known for his unfinished translation of The Digest of Justinian, published by Cambridge University Press 1904-09, though it was left unfinished due to his death in 1909. He is listed in the Roll of Benefactors of Gonville and Caius College as one of the college's more significant benefactors. [1]
