Haruhi Suzumiya (涼宮 ハルヒ, Suzumiya Haruhi)^?, (Seiyū - Aya Hirano)

Haruhi Suzumiya is a girl in her first year of high school. Her classmates characterize her as being eccentric, beautiful and unpredictable. She lacks a social life, detests small talk and is viewed by her classmates as a deviant. In her introduction, she declares to be interested only in aliens, espers, time travelers, dimensional travelers (specifically sliders), and other oddities; normal humans are of no interest to her. Haruhi even went so far as to found the SOS Brigade to try to meet and play with non-humans. She often refers to classmates as objects rather than people.

Haruhi demonstrates a large array of natural talents. She is very athletic, a natural at many different kinds of sports, and her grades are described as "better than others". She has also demonstrated musical talents for both the guitar and singing. Despite her many inborn abilities, she is rash, headstrong and often lacks common sense or good judgment. Until the formation of the SOS Brigade, she lacked any strong commitment or long-term interest in any single extracurricular activity. In fact, she joined every activity club in her high school only to quit them out of boredom the very same day, in spite of students pleading for her to stay due to her talents. It is because of her boredom with these clubs that she creates the SOS Brigade.

Haruhi parallels many of the ideals of Friedrich Nietzsche. The methods that Haruhi utilizes when founding the SOS Brigade also references Nietzsche's "The Madman". Haruhi's controls others solely by the force of her aggressive and competitive personality, echoing Nietzsche's concept of “will to power.” Haruhi almost completely ignores commonly accepted social standards in favor of what she deems to be the best course of action just as the Übermensch, or "super human," would. Haruhi is also capable of setting premeditated traps in order to obtain what she wants. For example, Haruhi obtains the SOS Brigade's clubroom computer by fabricating compromising photos of the Computer Society's President and blackmailing him. Similarly, she forces the recruitment of the SOS Brigade's members and holds daily gatherings within a clubroom that officially belongs to the Literature Club. The Student Council simply opt to ignore Haruhi's activities rather then having to deal with her directly. Similarly, many of Haruhi's classmates are intimidated by Haruhi and also choose to avoid having anything to do with her.

In spite of her selfishness, Haruhi does not sincerely wish for any harm to come Brigade members in order to satisfy her craving for mysterious events (Lone Island Syndrome). Haruhi also becomes increasingly less self-centered, as shown by her desire for approval from her peers and her empathy with highly-independent individuals in the episode/chapter "Live a Live." However, as Haruhi does not like to be made emotionally vulnerable to others, she is usually self-assured and haughty.

Haruhi's fascination and drive to find the mysterious is explained by a turning-point in Haruhi's childhood (Volume 1, Chapter 6). After visiting a typical baseball ball game, she was shocked to find that she was only one individual amongst a vast pool of 50,000 people, who in turn only composed a fraction of Japan's population. Though she originally believed her life to be filled with interesting people and events, she came to the realization that her experiences were not unique. Consequently, she believed then that there must be at least one person amongst many who were leading an interesting and truly individual life, causing her to seek out the extraordinary via her schemes. Her desire to non-humans also explains Haruhi's disdain for her classmates.

Haruhi is allegedly the cause of a significant incident approximately three years before her entry into high school. This event subsequently drew the attention of three prominent groups: the data entity aliens, a future human civilization with advanced time traveling technology, and a group of 'Espers' who spontaneously developed powers during the incident. They were drawn to Haruhi, correspondingly, by an off-the-scale data spike, inability to time travel to any date before the incident, and an inherent knowledge of the origin of their new powers. Depending on who one asks, Haruhi is herself explained as a crack in the space-time continuum, the first technological singularity to be spontaneously born in the universe or even God. In the words of Itsuki, "We would call a being with these powers 'God'."^[1] In fact, it is explained that she potentially has the ability to destroy the current world and create a new one from scratch if she becomes too bored with the current world. The other members of the SOS Brigade know this and try to accommodate her whims if possible. Ironically, Haruhi is the only member of the SOS Brigade who is unaware of these factions and her own powers. It is unknown how Haruhi might use her powers if she were suddenly to become aware of aliens, espers and time travellers. Hence, the general consensus amongst the SOS Brigade is keep Haruhi ignorant of this.

During the course of her middle school years, Haruhi has been approached by many boys for a date, with none of these offers ever being turned down, though most of proposals were apparently made through the phone. However, as explained by Taniguchi, the longest relationship was only a week, while the shortest a mere five minutes. Each abrupt breakup occurring because Haruhi became bored with the boys and frustrated by their lack of directness, a "very important issue" as she puts it. Many of her classmates now simply avoid her because of her legendary eccentricity.

Despite her insistence that "all men are worthless," mundane and boring, she is attracted to Kyon, even going so far as to attempt to get a date with him by splitting up the SOS Brigade by lottery on the club's first group activity -- using the search for aliens, espers and time-travellers as an excuse. Kyon is also the first person that Haruhi actually converses with and confides in at the beginning of their freshman year in high school, to the puzzlement of Taniguchi, Kunikida and Asakura. Haruhi also begins to rely on Kyon to carry out the grunt-work for her plans and even begins to listen to Kyon's suggestions in spite of her stubborn character. However, in keeping with her stubbornness, she adamantly tries to hide her affections for fear of embarrassment, as indicated when she feels depressed and angry after her botched attempt to secretly date Kyon.

Kyon (キョン, )^?, (Seiyū - Tomokazu Sugita)

Kyon is one of Haruhi's companions, and the second founding member of the SOS Brigade. Upon his entry into high school, he resigns himself to a lifestyle where his adolescent fantasies such as aliens, time travelers, and espers have no place. After one small conversation with him, Haruhi unexpectedly opened up to him and dragged him into her new club. His reputation and fate have since become inextricably entangled with Haruhi's. The name Kyon is also actually a nickname bestowed upon him by his aunt. His sister is responsible for spreading its use to his schoolmates, much to the chagrin of Kyon, who misses being called Onii-chan (お兄ちゃん, Onii-chan^? Lit. "older brother") by his sister. His real name remains unknown.

Although Haruhi Suzumiya is the title character, the story is told from Kyon's point of view. He narrates with sarcastic commentary on the various absurdities, club activities and events related to Haruhi. Kyon may also direct his thoughts at Haruhi, which Haruhi might respond to, thus making it unclear whether he is speaking aloud or merely thinking to himself. This could also be interpreted as an ability for Haruhi to occasionally achieve nearly telepathic empathy with Kyon. Kyon's narration follows the format of a Greek Chorus, speaking directly to the audience through internal dialogue.

He is also the only "normal" human in a club otherwise assembled to include a membership of an alien, esper and a time traveler. This is a cause of curiosity and concern amongst many parties, since Haruhi is "not interested in ordinary humans". Nagato refers to Kyon as an "irregular factor near Haruhi" responsible for an abrupt change in the data around Haruhi. Koizumi goes as far as to investigate Kyon's identity, only to affirm that Kyon is indeed an ordinary human. Asakura herself is quite puzzled by Haruhi's interest in Kyon and asks how it was that he has gotten Haruhi to open up.

Kyon's initial disbelief in the supernatural, paranormal and wonderous things of the world has a very dark root that is left unexplored in the anime. In the opening lines of the very first novel, he drily and unemotionally tells the reader(s): "I guess the day I stopped believing in anything wonderous or mysterious was the day I accidentally saw my mother passionately kiss Santa Clause at the mall when I was six." Having the two strongest icons of purity, that of his mother and santa, deconstructed before him at such a young age instilled in Kyon his trademark deep-seated cynicism. The infidelity on his mother's part also implies that Kyon's upbrining is in that of dysfunctional and/or emotionally distant family, with the parents more than likely seperated, divorced and/or remarried; thus explaining his cold and generally emotionally distant attitude to most of his peers.

A cynical and apathetic high school student, Kyon is the sole voice of reason in the SOS Brigade, and he sometimes intervenes when Haruhi behaves too erratically. Much to his irritation, this responsibility is his alone, since the other members passively go along with Haruhi's schemes. Despite his apparent discontent and his continued complaints, Kyon remains with the SOS Brigade and Haruhi, even though he is not required to do so. He feels certain that Haruhi should learn that not everything can go her way. It is because of this that Kyon develops a bond with Haruhi, the potential start of a love relationship. Although Kyon consciously balks at that idea that he loves Haruhi, the rest of the SOS Brigade encourages this relationship because it stabilizes her emotionally. Kyon is given credit for reducing the number of "Sealed Realties" that have been created by Haruhi.

John Smith (ジョン・スミス, John Smith^?)

John Smith is a fake name used by Kyon in a time travel. He once traveled back to three years ago and met Haruhi at that time. He told Haruhi his name is "John Smith" in order to hide his identity. Although just a passing thought to name himself that in the chapter "Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody," it becomes a critical factor in volume four, "The Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi." Seemingly presented with a normal high school life, a world without Haruhi, the extent of his "normalness" and attachment to the Brigade and Haruhi are made evident.

Yuki Nagato (長門 有希, Nagato Yuki)^?, (Seiyū - Minori Chihara)

Yuki Nagato is the only member of the club not recruited by Haruhi. She was originally the lone remaining member of the Literary Club and was found within the clubroom reading in solitude. She simply became a part of the SOS Brigade when Haruhi forcibly took over the clubroom. Yuki is methodical, stoic, succinct, and taciturn. She avoids speaking at all unless she is prompted to do so by a question directed at her or because her duties require it. Having a love for books and knowledge, she is often seen reading a book. After the school festival, she also became fond of working with computer software. Mikuru often feels nervous or intimidated by Nagato due to Nagato's abilities and her silent demeanor.

Yuki is not a typical human, but a "humanoid interface" or artificial human created by the Integrated Data Entity. As data that lacked a physical manifestation, her humanoid body established a communication link between her masters and humanity. She was sent to investigate the cause of the explosion of data that occurred three years ago which far exceeded anything they had observed. She is capable of superhuman feats and manipulating data, which can have an effect upon the physical world itself, an ability that Kyon refers to as "bogus magic." As a result, Yuki can have amazing athletic abilities (if she chooses to), program and manipulate software with incredible speed, create a baseball bat that always strike homeruns, arrange for a student (Asakura) to mysteriously transfer out of the high school, change the weather, predict the future and many other things.

As a "humanoid interface," Yuki has been assigned to observe Haruhi and keep her a stable subject for continued observation for the Data Integration Entity (the intensity of her servitude is revealed in the story "Endless Eight"). It is revealed that she is often manipulating the situation from behind-the-scenes, preventing the occurances of many erratic and bizzare events caused by Haruhi. In one such case, Yuki allowed the Computer Society's President to mysteriously disappear instead of preventing it in order to alleviate Haruhi's boredom (Mystérique Sign).

She finds it difficult to empathize with humans, and often defers to Kyon's better judgment where it concerns ethical problems she has little understanding of. She also has apparently developed some sense of attachement to Kyon and the SOS Brigade. At the start of the series, she is always seen wearing glasses, but following a fight with Ryōko Asakura, she forgets to regenerate them after dropping during the battle, and they remain absent after that. This may largely be due to Kyon commenting that he wasn't a "glasses guy" and that she looked better without them. Kyon appreciates Yuki's reliability and dependability, often relying upon her to diffuse the byproducts of Haruhi's wild schemes and imagination.

"During the story of "The Day of Sagittarius", Yuki becomes very accustomed to and fond of computers as a sort of hobby, though never displacing the majority of time she spends reading at school. After the Society's defeat in their own game, Nagato agrees to play with the Society's computers from time to time. In the novel's corresponding chapter, but not the anime, it is also revealed that she has many secret admirers, with the Computer Society's President possibly being one such admirer.

Mikuru Asahina (朝比奈 みくる, Asahina Mikuru)^?, (Seiyū - Yuko Goto)

Mikuru Asahina is a shy and timid girl with a childish naïveté, who is also considered to be cute by many of her peers, largely due to her lolita appeal. Although she is supposedly the senior (second-year student) of the other members of the SOS Brigade, she is treated as though she were much younger. Within the novels, her beauty is such that many boys consider her to be an "untouchable flower on the mountain." Thanks to her prominent role, the SOS Brigade's horrible home movie attracted a male crowd at the school's cultural festival. Kyon suggests that many boys in the school would participate in some kind of grand retribution against any other boy who have had their way with Mikuru. Similarily, Kyon also feels protective of Asahina and vindicative against anyone romantically involved with her. This is indicated when he becomes jealous and angry towards Koizumi for acting out his role as the romantic male lead within Haruhi's film for the cultural festival.

Haruhi "voluntarily arrested" Mikuru and when she was caught daydreaming in a second-year classroom. Mikuru is then coerced to leave the Calligraphy Club in order to join the SOS Brigade instead. Mikuru only stays after seeing that Nagato was presumably within Haruhi's club as well. According to Haruhi, Mikuru serves as the attractive girl in the story, a necessary ingredient for something extraordinary to occur. In addition to this, Haruhi regards Mikuru as her club mascot and personal dress-up doll. The stronger-willed Haruhi exploits Mikuru's sex appeal either for extortion (i.e. the computer taken from the Computer Society) or to promote SOS Brigade activities and forces Mikuru into various costumes, such as bunny-girl, maid or nurse costumes. Mikuru is also arbitrarily required by Haruhi to wear a specific costume while in the SOS Brigade's club room. Mikuru has also adapted a role where she brews and serves tea to members within the clubroom.

Mikuru is actually a time traveler sent to investigate the cause of the turmoil in the space-time continuum three years ago which prevents time travel beyond that point. Despite this, she seems rather uninformed or simply ignorant about the past she was sent to, as she was wondering how something so massive could float on water, which is easily explained by basic physics (Lone Island Syndrome chapter). She was the second to approach Kyon, after Yuki, about her group's interest in Haruhi. Mikuru explains her time traveling as being akin to adding another frame into a sequence of animation. Simply stated, time is not continuous, it is instead composed of multiple "time planes" with infinitesimal breaks occurring between them. This means that history should not be appreciably affected by her time traveling. Regardless, Mikuru maintains confidentiality to all exclusive information, as well as the truth of her actual age.

Mikuru also has developed a crush on Kyon and has tried to restrain it to avoid disrupting the nascent Kyon-Haruhi's relationship, which in turn helps avoid nigh-apocalyptic situation found at the climax of the novel, "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya." Despite this, Kyon frequently remarks to himself about Mikuru, in regards to her beauty or helplessness, or the food or tea her touch graces. Because Mikuru is the most helpess member of the SOS Brigade, Kyon regards himself as her chivalric protector.

In the 7th novel of the series, Mikuru is sent back two weeks by Kyon to save herself. When she was looking for a place to stay, Kyon tells Tsuruya that that this Mikuru is the long lost twin sister of the Mikuru already existing on that time plane, called Michiru.

Mikuru Asahina (big) (朝比奈 みくる(大), Asahina Mikuru (Dai)^?)

An older Mikuru Asahina, from farther into the future. Referred to as Asahina-san (big) by Kyon, in order to differentiate between the older and younger versions. The younger Asahina is referred to as Asahina-san (small) (朝比奈さん(小), Asahina-san (Shō)^?) when the older Mikuru is around.

The adult Mikuru makes brief appearances by traveling back from a further time to give Kyon messages and hints which are critical to the plot. The first appearance of the adult Mikuru corroborates the younger Mikuru's claim that she is a time traveller, while producing additional evidence that Haruhi is possessed of unusual powers. While Kyon has seen both the younger and the older Mikuru at same time, the older Asahina is not allowed to reveal herself nor make her presence known to her younger self (Volume 4).

Itsuki Koizumi (古泉 一樹, Koizumi Itsuki)^?, (Seiyū - Daisuke Ono)

Itsuki Koizumi is the last member to have joined the SOS Brigade. Haruhi recruited him because he was a "mysterious transfer student". He is constantly smiling and aways speaks in a formal and polite manner. Itsuki was sent to observe and protect Haruhi and the rest of humanity and nonchalantly complies with Haruhi's plans to keep her emotionally stable, as he does not want Haruhi to use her powers destructively. Itsuki is also prone to giving long and detailed explanations, accompanied by exaggerated hand gestures. He also enthusiastically plays different kinds of board games with Kyon to pass time within the Brigade's clubroom, although Kyon has noted that he is not very good at any of them.

Itsuki is also a member in a secret association which he simply refers to as "The Agency" (機関, "The Agency"^? Lit. "The Organization"). The members of this society consist of special humans known as espers who gained unique ESP-like powers and special knowledge regarding Haruhi three years ago. Since then, they have been actively protecting humanity by fighting giant beings known as Shinjin (神人, Shinjin^? Lit. "godlike person") within the closed spaces generated by Haruhi. Should the destruction of the Shinjin be left unchecked, the Closed Spaces generated would eventually take reality's place. He often gives his gratitude to Kyon for keeping Haruhi emotionally stable, and in turn, reducing the workload he and his colleagues are required to perform. Itsuki has also revealed that there are other factions that have not yet been revealed by Haruhi, and that "The Agency" is often in conflict with the other factions backing their respective agents within the SOS Brigade. For example, he suspects that Mikuru was chosen by the time-travellers for her beauty and for her ability to seduce Kyon, in order to control the group dynamic within the SOS Brigade.

Out of the three Brigade members, Kyon is the least fond of Itsuki. He often finds himself annoyed with Itsuki's plastic smile, his willingness to acquiesce to Haruhi's outrageous schemes and his various forays into his psychological and philosophical theories. Itsuki's fondness for speculation often causes him to produce explanations for situations involving the SOS Brigade, its members and related events.

Despite the theory he advances in which Haruhi is the equivalent of God, Itsuki says that there are many differing lines of speculation about Haruhi within "The Agency." Koizumi himself does not believe in a singular God, nor does he regard Haruhi as such, although he reveals that he has colleagues that do. He does not believe she is God as she probably lacks the vast knowledge and imagination to create the entire universe, though she certainly has the power to warp reality. The extent of her powers are then limited to her imagination and her emotional stability. Regardless of Haruhi's true nature, Itsuki also reveals that the majority of "The Agency" advocates observing Haruhi instead of doing anything that might provoke her.

Koizumi has also noticed Haruhi and Kyon's emotional closeness and has insinuated on many occasions that Kyon genuinely loves Haruhi, although these observations only serve to make Kyon more annoyed at him. Koizumi has also said that he finds Haruhi to be charming and expressed his envy over the unconscious bond of faith between Kyon and Haruhi.

Ryōko Asakura (朝倉 涼子, Asakura Ryōko)^?, (Seiyū - Natsuko Kuwatani)

At first, Ryōko appears to be a compassionate and hard-working high school girl who is particularly concerned about Haruhi and how she has distanced herself from the rest of her classmates. One of Kyon's friends, Taniguchi, places her in the top three girls in the school with a grade of AA+: indicative of her pleasant personality, beauty, and athleticism.

However, it turns out that she is Yuki's backup, and as such, is also another "humanoid interface". Much like Yuki, she finds it difficult to empathize with humans, but is able to blend in well enough to be considered likeable. Initially she cheerfully supports Kyon's reaching out to Haruhi, often encouraging him to "open her up to the class", but later she tries to kill him with a combat knife in the hopes of catalyzing an observable reaction from Haruhi. Her efforts are stopped when she is defeated and removed from the physical world by Yuki, with a cover-up of her moving to Canada. Asakura makes a reappearance in volume four, on a parallel timeline in which Haruhi never attends North High or forms an SOS Brigade.

Tsuruya (鶴屋), Tsuruya^? (Seiyū - Yuki Matsuoka)

Tsuruya is the hyperactive friend of Mikuru (from the current time plane) notable for her prominent tooth and loud voice. Not much is required to elicit long fits of unrestrained and intense laughter from her. Her knowledge of the SOS Brigade comes almost exclusively from Mikuru. She is also the heir of the Tsuruya family, which serves as the main financial support of Itsuki's Agency.

Her most noticeable features are her ankle-length hair and a small fang-like tooth, which is usually seen when she is laughing or smiling. It is because of this tooth that she has an idiosyncratic speech pattern, misspeaking words by leaving out syllables, as seen in episode 9. Her speech pattern is often accompanied with a lisp. Regardless, her cheerful and friendly disposition, along with her natural beauty and figure makes Tsuruya one of the top idols and sex symbols of her school alongside Mikuru; though she is much less shy and humble about that fact than Mikuru is.

Though not an actual member of the SOS Brigade, she does play a minor role in Mikuru Asahina's Adventure - Episode 00 and serves on their baseball team in episode four. She also has a small appearance in the ninth and twelfth episodes of the anime, but otherwise appears relatively sparingly throughout the anime. She appears a few more times during the novel, appearing more prominently than in the anime's rendition of the same stories, and even getting along very well with Haruhi. Kyon believes this is because both Haruhi and Tsuruya are nearly insane. Though she is not a brigade member, Tsuruya is still used as an extra body for some of the Brigade's activities.

Taniguchi (谷口), Taniguchi^? (Seiyū - Minoru Shiraishi) and Kunikida (国木田), Kunikida^? (Seiyū - Megumi Matsumoto)

Taniguchi (left) and Kunikida (right) are classmates and Kyon's friends. Taniguchi went to the same junior high school as Haruhi. Both of them played very small parts in Mikuru Asahina's Adventure - Episode 00, with neither having many lines to say. They are friends and are almost always seen together.

Taniguchi is comically lascivious; he gave a 'score' of attractiveness to each first-year girl based upon his tastes and preferences. He remembers the full names of everyone receiving an 'A' rank, with Nagato receiving an A-. As for Mikuru, her mere presence elicits an altered state of adoration for Taniguchi and Kunikida, especially when she was in her soba-serving costume. He also knew Haruhi from back in junior high, and is Kyon's original source of information on Haruhi before he started conversing with her.

Kunikida is much quieter than Taniguchi with the latter doing most of the talking when the two are around. Kunikida is a down-to-Earth person (Too speculative.), much like Kyon. He is certainly interested in girls as well, but does not indulge in the vain fantasies Taniguchi hopes to achieve.

The Computer Research Society President (コンピュータ研究会部長, Konpyūta Kenkyūkai Buchō)^?, (Seiyū - Nobuyuki Kobushi)

As the name implies, he is the President of the Computer Research Society (or Computer Society). The President is never given a name other than "Computer Society President" or variations upon that term (all that is known of his name is the first syllable: "ya"). He and his club have had the misfortune of being next-door to the SOS Brigade. He was blackmailed by Haruhi for both a computer and an internet connection. He hasn't yet forgiven this, and checks the SOS Brigade website to see if they are putting the computer to use, making him the primary cause of their hit counter's steady rise.

In one episode, he is trapped in an alternate spatial frame involuntarily created by Haruhi. Eventually, he is saved by SOS Brigade members in Haruhi's absence, while investigating his disappearance.

He has a passion for computers and has, with the other four members of the Computer Society, developed their own basic sci-fi strategy game called The Day of Sagittarius III. He later challenges the SOS Brigade to a rigged contest using their game, betting four of his club's laptops in an attempt to reclaim the originally pilfered computer. In spite of their cheating, SOS brigade won this contest due to Yuki's overwhelming ability with computers. Despite the loss of four additional laptops, the President was at least overjoyed at having discovered a genius computer hacker that would participate in his club's activities. Yet, after this defeat, Haruhi stakes a claim over the Computer Society while hinting over possible SOS membership of Computer Society members.

There was once a girl, Emiri Kimidori, who claimed to be his girlfriend, but it turns out he did not have one, strangely enough. This is due to a plan Yuki made for unknown reasons, though it's suspected she did it to alleviate some of Haruhi's recent boredom. Rather, in the light novels, it was hinted he is one of the secret admirers of Nagato, during the "Day of Sagittarius" chapter. As a president, however, he could not admit his club did not have nor needed girls, as the very honor of the Computer Society was at stake.

Generally, Kyon regards the president and his members as pitiable victims of Haruhi's tyranny, as she received hardware and software through blackmail and even had the sobbing president install everything. However, during the light novel chapter of Mystérique Sign, Kyon wonders where he put the disposable camera of the fabricated sexual harassment of Mikuru, since Kimidori claimed to be his girlfriend and he was able to touch Asahina's breast.

Emiri Kimidori (喜緑 江美里, Kimidori Emiri^?, (Seiyū - Yuri Shiratori)

Emiri appears in "Mysterique Sign", reporting the missing Computer Research Society President. She claims to be his girlfriend, though when asked later by Kyon, the President claims that he does not have a girlfriend. She is in fact another Humanoid Interface just like Yuki and Ryōko. Like Yuki, she speaks with a quiet voice that is barely audible. She also serves as the secretary to the Chairman of the Student Council.

Student Council Chairman (生徒会長, Seitokaichō^?)

Chairman of the student council who was elected by Itsuki's "method". Name remains unknown.

Keiichi Tamaru (多丸 圭一, Tamaru Keiichi^?)

Supposedly a distant relative of Koizumi's. Actually a member of the Agency. His normal appearance is of a wealthy middle-aged man who has a private villa on a small isolated isle. Played a part in the murder mysteries, as well as the other three agency members, that were meant to alleviate Haruhi's boredom.

Yutaka Tamaru (多丸 裕, Tamaru Yutaka^?)

Keiichi's younger brother. A member of the Agency.

Sonou Mori (森 園生, Mori Sonou^?)

A member of the Agency. Her normal appearance is that of a maid.

Aragawa (新川, Aragawa^?)

A member of the Agency. First name remains unknown. His normal appearance is that of a multi-talented butler.

Kyon's Sister (キョンの妹, Kyon no imōto)^?, (Seiyū - Sayaka Aoki)

Not much is revealed about Kyon's fifth-grade sister, not even her real name is given. The other characters simply refer to the eleven-year-old as Kyon's (Younger) Sister or Little Sis (妹ちゃん, Imōto-chan^?). She has relatively few speaking lines, though she does appear in The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina - Episode 00, episode 6, and in episode 14, fulfilling the duties of an irrepressible younger sister. She has even fewer lines and appearances in the original novel version as opposed to the anime's rendition. Usually, her presence is made apparent whenever Kyon is at home.

She is carefree, happy, and playful, once hiding herself in Kyon's bag to sneak going on vacation with him. She seems to get along well with all of the SOS Brigade, especially with Mikuru, sharing a sister-like relationship with her.

She is responsible for spreading her brother's nickname. After hearing an aunt call him "Kyon", she adopted the nickname as well. When Kyon's friends visited his home and overheard his sister call him by that nickname, they started using it as well.

Okabe (岡部, Okabe^?)

The form teacher of Kyon and Haruhi's class. In charge of the handball club at the school. First name remains unknown.

Miyoko Yoshimura (吉村美代子, Yoshimura Miyoko^?)

A friend of Kyon's sister's.

Nakagawa (中河, Nakagawa^?)

A friend of Kyon's from middle school. Apparently fell in love with Nagato at first sight. Falling in love with Nagato is actually an illusion created by himself, as he is not aware of his ability to detect information synthesis thought-entities. The ability is later removed by Nagato.

Shamisen (シャミセン, )^?, (Seiyū - Kenichi Ogata)

A stray cat that Kyon was forced to adopt by Haruhi. During the filming of The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina, Haruhi alters reality causing Shamisen to temporarily gain the ability to speak. Kyon's sister gives him the nickname, Shami, and spends the most time with him at home.

Kyon, Nagato, and Koizumi later planted two informational entity atoms on Shami in the 8th novel.

Shamisen #2 (シャミセン2号, Shamisen Ni-gou^?)

Another cat, but unlike Shamisen, she is female. Her nickname is Shami Two.
