At the end of World War II, several Kwans arose. They were Chung Do Kwan, Han Moo Kwan, Oh Do Kwan, Moo Duk Kwan, Yun Moo Kwan (Jidokwan), Chang Moo Kwan, Jung Do Kwan, and Song Moo Kwan. In the late 1950's, these Kwans united under the name Tae Soo Do. A few years later, the name Taekwondo was adopted for its similarity in name only, to Taekkyon (practiced by the Koguryo, Silla, Baekjae, and Koryo Dynasties).
Chang Moo Kwan was founded by Yoon, Byung In and Lee, Nam Suk, first as the "YMCA Kwon Bop Bu" (권법무) in 1946. Today, the official Taekwondo Chang Moo Kwan still exist in Korea as a fraternal friendship club with its office in a youth athletic club in Seoul. The current president of Chang Moo Kwan is KIM, Soon Bae. Grandmaster Kim is also on the Kukkiwon Dan Promotion Committee. The official martial arts curriculum of Chang Moo Kwan is the Kukkiwon system. Chang Moo Kwan, like all Kwans, support the Kukkiwon and the WTF.
Though all of the Kwans united and formed the Kukkiwon, and their curriculum today follows Kukkiwon standards, in the old days, schools affiliated with each kwans contain slight variations in their techniques. These variations may be completly unperceptable to those who do not study Taekwondo, but they were obvious to students who went from training at a school affilated with one Kwan to one affiliated with a different Kwan. Variations in the application of blocks, kicks, and various hand techniques are some things where variations were also noticable. However, today that is not the case in the mass majority of schools, though a very few may exsist.
