Rubin has paved the way for African American Tennis Players around the world, but has been plagued by injury. Rubin reached the quarterfinals at the French Open in 1995, 2000, and 2003. She also reached the Australian Open semifinals in 1996, defeating Gabriela Sabatini in the fourth round and Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario , in a marathon three setter in the quarters, losing to Monica Seles 7-6, 1-6, 5-7. She has also had many career wins over top players, including Lindsay Davenport, Justine Henin-Hardenne, Amelie Mauresmo, and Serena Williams. Her 2002 upset of Serena Williams notably ended her winning streak of 21 matches,a stretch that carried Williams through wins at the French Open and Wimbledon.
Rubin received a wild card into the 2006 US Open, but had the misfortune of playing No. 9 Nicole Vaidisova, and lost 4-6, 3-6.
