Chalk Farm Road
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Chalk Farm Road is a street in the Camden Town area of London England. There is a widespread misapprehension that the road that runs through Camden Market is part of Camden High Street, but it is actually Chalk Farm Road. Camden Market is a major centre for the retailing of street fashions and other goods targeted at teenagers and young adults, and Chalk Farm Road has an alternative culture atmosphere.
The street is part of the route from central London to Hampstead. It is a continuation of Camden High Street, and begins at the junction of that street with Parkway, Camden Road and Kentish Town Road. Camden Town underground station is at this end of the road and Chalk Farm underground station is at the northern end. Both are on the Northern Line. Chalk Farm Road crosses the Regent's Canal at Camden Lock.
Buck Street Market, Camden Canal Market and the weekend market in the Electric Ballroom are on the eastern side of the street and Camden Lock Market and the Stables Market are on the western side. The Inverness Street market is in a side street on the western side and the final element of Camden Market is the shops of Chalk Farm Road itself, which trade with their frontages wide open to the street in a semi-market style.
Besides the Electric Ballroom, entertainment venues in Chalk Farm Road include The Roundhouse, which occupies a former railway shed. Pink Floyd played the first ever show there in 1966 and it was the venue for the only UK gig by The Doors.
