Ceratomia catalpae Boisduval, 1875 |
The Catalpa Sphinx Ceratomia catalpae, also known as Catawba Worm, is a hawk moth native to southeastern North America.
The green caterpillars, growing to a length of about 5 cm (2 in), feed on the leaves of the Southern Catalpa, Catawba or Indian bean tree (Catalpa bignonioides). They are highly desired as fishing bait.
The first trial of aerial crop dusting was an attempt to control Catalpa Sphinx.
