Centrum (arts organization)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Centrum, located in Fort Worden State Park near Port Townsend, Washington in Jefferson County is a gathering place for artists and creative thinkers from around the world, students of all ages and backgrounds, and audiences seeking cultural enrichment.
[edit] Origin
Centrum was founded as a partnership between the Washington State Arts Commission, the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, and the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission. Centrum continues to work in partnership with these agencies and has developed new partnerships with educational, arts, and social service organizations such as Goddard College, Copper Canyon Press, and Skookum that extend its mission and expand its capacity and reach. With these partners Centrum is able to provide year-round programming at Fort Worden.
[edit] Activities
While most programming is intergenerational, Centrum also provides a series of residential learning experiences that serve youth only. About one-third of Centrum workshop participants are 18 years old or younger.
Over the past 34 years hundreds of thousands of individuals—artists, creative thinkers, students, and audiences—have passed through Centrum. Centrum directly serves about 27,000 individuals each year. In 2006 Centrum launched Experience, Centrum’s Magazine of the Creative Life. At the core of the Centrum community are more than one thousand individual donors and volunteers.
