The Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) is a think tank whose mandate is to deal with issues of international governance and economics. It is based in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.
It was founded in 2002 with a donation of C$30 million from Jim Balsillie, co-CEO of Research in Motion and a matching grant by the Canadian government.
It is presently headquartered in the former Seagram Museum in downtown Waterloo. Its executive director is Dr. John English. Paul Heinbecker, Canada's former Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, serves as Distinguished Fellow, International Relations.
A major project of CIGI is an online research portal called International Governance Leaders and Organizations Online (IGLOO) aimed at researchers, academics, policy practitioners and interested public. It includes, among other features, a library of research papers and materials, a news centre providing the latest related news and events, and blogs and discussion communities for its users. It also hosts the website of the Academic Council of the United Nations System.
