Central Islip (known colloquially as C.I.) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Suffolk County, New York, USA, and a hamlet of the Town of Islip. The population was 31,950 at the 2000 census.

Central Islip is located at 40° 47' 3" North, 73° 11' 57" West (40.784194, -73.199062)GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 18.8 km² (7.3 mi²), all land. Its schools are the Early Childhood Center, Anthony Alfano School, Andrew T. Morrow Elementary, Francis J. O'Neill Elementary, Marguerite Mulvey Elementary, Cordello Ave. Elementary, Mulligan Intermediate School, Ralph G. Reed Middle School, and Central Islip Senior High School.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 31,950 people, 8,792 households, and 6,813 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,699.2/km² (4,398.2/mi²). There were 9,189 housing units at an average density of 488.7/km² (1,264.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 47.79% White, 27.45% African American, 0.52% Native American, 3.10% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 16.01% from other races, and 5.01% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 35.84% of the population.

There were 8,792 households out of which 40.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.5% were married couples living together, 17.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.5% were non-families. 16.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.56 and the average family size was 3.87.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 29.2% under the age of 18, 11.0% from 18 to 24, 32.5% from 25 to 44, 19.8% from 45 to 64, and 7.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 97.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.3 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $55,504, and the median income for a family was $57,252. Males had a median income of $35,187 versus $27,842 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $17,910. About 8.3% of families and 11.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.8% of those under age 18 and 8.7% of those age 65 or over.

Central Islip Senior High School , has one of the best music departments in th country.The Central Islip Concert Choir raised 150,000 dollors to embrace a trip of many to Europe in 2005.They were one of three in the country to be invited.

The Central Islip Marching Band/Concert Band and Wind Ensemble. Receive extremely high ratings in Competitions and Parades and are known as one of the best , if not THE best on long island.

Central Islip once had a large brick constructed mental hospital just south of what is now part of the "College Woods" area (formerly known as "Carleton Park"). Portions of the psychiatric facility still remain intact. The main building has been recontructed to serve the new Cohalan Court Complex which is located just past Citibank Park.


Central Islip was briefly mentioned in the 1993 song Tarantula, by Dogbowl & Kramer.


Former Minnesota Vikings coach, Mike Tice, was a coach for the high school football team.


What is now the parking lot for the new fire house was once the location of the Salvation Army Thrift Shop. In earlier years, the building was a small movie theater.
