Cavos

Cavos or Kavos is the name of an Italian family of composers, musicians, and architects who settled in Russia at the end of 18th century. They came of an old, well-to-do Venetian family of Spanish origin.

Alberto Giovanni Cavos was a director of the Venice theatre “La Fenice”, father of Catarino Camillo Cavos. The names Alberto, Giovanni and Camillo were subsequently passed on to their immediate descendants.

Catterino Albertovich Cavos also Catarino Camillo Cavos (Russian: Катерино Альбертович Кавос, born: October 30, 1775, Venice, Italy – died: May 10 [OS April 28], 1840 St. Petersburg, Russia), a Venetian immigrant who came to Russia in 1798 and became a naturalised Russian, was a composer and conductor of the Imperial Theatres, who played an important role in the history of opera in Russia.

His son, Albert Catterinovich Cavos (1801 - 1863), was an architect who built St. Petersburg Mariinsky Theatre from the theatre-circus burnt in 1859, and rebuilt the Bolshoi Moscow Theatre burnt in 1853, see the link: [1]. His daughter Camilla was the wife of Nicholas Benois and mother of the artist Alexandre Benois, sculptor Albert Benois and architect Leon Benois (grandfather of Sir Peter Ustinov); their great-grandchildren included Eugene Lanceray and Zinaida Serebriakova.

Another of his sons, Ivan Catterinovich Cavos (1805 - 1861), served 30 years in the Imperial St. Petersburg theaters, where he became the director of Italian opera.

His grandson, Caesar Albertovich Cavos (1824 - 1883) - the son of Albert Cavos, the academician of architecture, was the chairman of the commission for building in Saint Petersburg of the bridge for Emperor Alexander II. He was the builder of the post office, the hospital of Prince Oldenburgsky, and some other buildings.
