If you're an idealist, I'm a cynic. I've recently run into several people on wikipedia that are not vandals but what I feel are a bigger threat to wikipedia, people that truly believe they are right. Anyway, although we've never crossed paths (I stumbled upon your page via the trifecta userbox, in case you were curious) on an article, I enjoyed your user page (although I thought the daily deeds section was a bit spurious) and felt compelled to leave a comment. It's clear to me that you don't think of yourself as a leader, at least not any more than being a mother implies, but to simply refer to you as leading by example doesn't sufficiently capture it. Perhaps it is better put by Ray Kroc when he said, "The quality of a leader is reflected in the standards they set for themselves." Here's my thanks to you, not for raising the standards of articles but of Wikipedia.

I just joined Esperanza a few days ago after wanting to join (but forgetting to do so) for weeks. (It appears I joined just a time for a nice welcome!) Your user page is interesting, too. You should move the essay to User:CatherineMunro/Essay, add the subpage to Category:Wikipedia essays, and then just put the essay on your main user page using a template inclusion function (that is, {{/Essay}}). As for my user page, I have to admit that I was inspired by User:Essjay's user page (who, coincidentally, also welcomed me) after I saw he won the user page design contest. [edit] Picture problem

Hello again. I have uploaded two pictures that are of my own creation (just using Windows' "Paint" program), they are custom CD covers (yeah I know, pretty simple), that contain no Copyrighted images or anything like that. But Wikipedia has put a tag on it that says: 'WARNING: This fair use image has been tagged as orphaned because it is not used inline. If it is not used in the article namespace within 7 days, it will be speedy deleted.' Since it is a custom CD cover for a custom CD, I couldn't justify creating an article for it, other than on my own User Page. But I do want it on my User Page, is there any way that I can still have it on my User Page, or do I just need to let Wikipedia delete it? Thanks for Your Time Jay 20:08, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Border spacing

Thank you for your help on the table problem I posted on the Village Pump. Your code sample solves most of my obstacles in creating a table model with modularity. I tried to adjust the space between the inner border and the central table, to match it with the cell spacing, but it just won't go small enough. For your convenience, here's the link: User:Go for it!/table test 2.

As for modularity, I'm having trouble diversifying cells. Here's what I need to do:

  1. Divide the bottom box in the right hand column into two boxes sitting side-by-side.
  2. Divide the right-hand box (of the two boxes just created in #1) into two boxes, one above the other.

[edit] Regarding vandalism.

Hi Catherine, my name is Jared and I'm having a little problem. Another user and I recently put up three users for a possible sockpuppetry claim (see here) because of overwhelming evidence that states so (and its taking a long time to get this over with; only one user has posted a comment). My problem is that User:Wintermetal keeps taking the sockpupper template off of his home and discussion pages, stating in his edit summary that I should "ruin my own home page". He has done this every time I revert it back, and I warn him of a potential block every time, but he doesn't care (and I'm not an admin). Could you please help me....maybe block him or something...let him know he is not supposed to take the notice off of his page (which incidentally makes him more suspicious of sockpuppetry!) [edit] Problems with User Bachs

Hello Catherine. Perhaps you can put on your admin cap and help with a burgeoning problem. User:Bachs has inserted original research and POV material in a variety of articles which can be seen here. When others edit or prune what he has inserted, he simply reverts to his material again and marks the changes rv vandalism. He seems to have a particular animosity toward User:NatusRoma, having removed many of that user's contributions today and marked such changes as (RV NatusRoma's vandalism).

It seems to me -- and to another user who commented on NatusRoma's user page -- that some admin intervention is in order. Thank you... David Hoag 17:56, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

Hiya, I recall from last year that you were involved in creating the page on http://www.wikipedia.org. What's the order of the languages in the three tiers based on? Hi Catherine. I have loved the essay which heads your talk page. Your style and message reminds me very much of the writings of Beatrice Warde the American writer about printing and typography. She penned the famous broadside This is a Printing Office ... which adorned many hot-metal printing office from the mid 1930s onwards. Like WP it also got translated into many languages. In the printed version of BW's text some words are highlighted in red. Is it possible to do this in Mediawiki? The layout of the text on the BW page is as it was printed, but I have to smallify some of the lines to replicate the emphasis she gave to the original. It's in their cover feature on how to create sites with impact. They highlight "Ten sites that have instant impact", and Wikipedia is one of them. There's a screenshot of the wikipedia.org portal, and they say "Wikipedia pages aren't much to look at. The collaborative encyclopedia overcomes this with two landing pages. The first is a high-impact splash page with language options, search and navigation, while the second highlights current content." [edit] This is a Printing Office on the BW page

Dear Catherine, sorry to be a pain, but could you unformat the text of the broadside on the BW page. The Princeton layout is wrong and I am trying to find the right version for you. As designed by BW it occupies a page about 18in x 2ft, with lines set out as I originally wrote them and centred down the page. The Princeton layout model destroys the declamatory and inscriptional nature of it, I fear.

As BW designed it the large word 'WORDS' in the line 'From this place ...' is in red, as is the whole of the line ' Friend you stand...' There was also a single red fleuron, centered, separating the second and third lines. As far as I can tell there is no way of doing fleurons in Mediawiki, and there seems nothing suitable on UTF-8. Microsoft Monotype Sorts has them, but not the one in question.

Warde graded the sizes of type to indicate emphasis as if the words were spoken. I had planned to add codes to the lines to vary the letter heights to try and indicate this.

I do like the border and the background and do appreciate your efforts on this. I am sure we will get there. Kind regards. Apwoolrich 18:09, 27 April 2006 (UTC)

The Princeton version is in fact a keepsake made for a master printers' dinner or conference in the States in about 1950 (Isn't Google wonderful!)

In my Google search, I have been surprised to see the number of versions where there are subtle changes, just a word here and there, yet all claiming to be the BW version. Very odd. Kind regards. Thanks for your message, I see there are 34 John Taylors in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, so there is a way to go. UK and N Ireland public library subscribers have just gained free access by logging on with their library IDs. and I can do the same with the online version of The Times. I got onto Wikipedia today, and someone had just up and deleted some of the pages I've recently made. They weren't even listed as Articles For Deletion or anything, let alone they were good articles anyway. Here are the pages that were deleted:

  • DJ Cheapshot
  • SpyTech Records
  • 4-Zone (rapper)

  • Ok. There was a page that I updated that was very similiar, but it survived deletion. The DJ DJ Cheapshot is a very notable DJ. He's actually one of the most sought after in Hollywood. Although the rapper 4-Zone is fairly new to the scene (his debut album comes out June 6th), I thought that maybe he should have a page. And as for SpyTech Records, it is the record label for DJ Cheapshot, and has some notable musicians signed to it, so it definitley deserves a page. I will present this arguement where you said. Yeah, half of the problem is we get 50 trillion of them on requests for speedy every day, one of the records was up for speedy and seeing the linked articles, it seemed to follow that logic. Try by yourself:

  1. Go to your watchlist
  2. Select Diff for the most recent entry of a page (i.e. Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/El_kondor_pada)
  3. Now hover your mouse over "edit this page". You can see that instead being, let's say http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/El_kondor_pada&action=edit, it shows something like http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/El_kondor_pada&action=edit&oldid=52896575, even if when you click on "edit" that is at that particular moment the most recent version.
  4. If you edit it and someone has added something going through the standard http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/El_kondor_pada&action=edit, you will overwrite their edits, as wikipedia assumes you know you are editing an out of date version (you only really get the warning the first time you click on an old version, but not if at the time it was the most recent one)
  5. Well, the moral of the story is to ensure I always edit using the link to "edit this page" from the article namespace not from the history/diffs window.

I am leaving this note as I saw your name at the Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2006-05-08/Technology report. Not sure if you can help or you know who to talk to. the thing is this "bug" has got me into troubles a couple of times as people think I am using misleading edit summaries and removing entries. I created an article called bootlegproduction. It was deleted by Radiokirk because it was more of a list than it was an article. Radiokirk's comment to me was that it must be worthy of an encyclopedia and not a "laundry list of items". He later wrote that it has the potential to be an article, but it cannot be in such form as a list. After editing major portions of it, I reposted it, only to have it deleted by you on the grounds that it was a "recreation of deleted content at Bootlegproductions". Please respond to me why it is wrong for an article to existence only because it had been deleted in it's former state, even if the article was edited to standards that could seem fit for an encyclopedia, Bobcheezy 17:41 23 May 2006

Hi there, I'm currently searching for someone to act as a casual advisor in my case vs. Hatto (talk contribs) before I consider taking it to RfM or RfA. I've already been "given" assistance by the Mediation Cabal but as I received no useful response from my mediator and no effective actions were taken, I've had to search for other means. I believe an administrator will eventually be needed to take firm action on this user, but I would rather take some measure of mediation before I start contacting anyone else.

I uploaded a photo yesterday for use in an article on Princess Märtha Louise of Norway. It's the lower photo of her at a book signing. Unfortunately I uploaded an uncropped version first and it's really ugly. I corrected it with a newer version but the old one is still there waiting for a sysop to delete it. Could you? Hi, I'm trying to check a quote by Jimbo I just paraphrased (End of Talk:List of fictional universes#Where_does_this_end.3F, and in parsing the archives wished you all thought to do this: Use the Template:succession to allow scanning archive to archive (See bottom monarchy's, say Hugh Capet for example, or The_Honor_of_the_Queen#Masadans to show how flexible this little template can be!) so when someone is running down something they saw, they can pop from version to version with next to no fuss.

If you find merit in the idea, I'll be glad to lend a hand retrofiting the older stuff. Just drop me a note. I need something to keep me off the streets when Europe goes to sleep, the system runs fast, and I'm too burned out to cognate on proper sentence formation! Back to looking for that interview link! Hi. I've just finished reading your userpage and your respective opinion on the encyclopedia. I regard your summary as very on point and I paticularly appreciated the elaboration you went into with the explanation. Overall, I think it summed up the current aspects of the encyclopedia and where and what should be done with it exceptionally well.

I feel like the encyclopedia has a great deal of potential and hasn't fullfilled it, yet. I disagree with some of the current organisations of the project but agree with its overall purpose and goals, so I've dedicated quite a bit of time. I think Wikipedia needs more good illustrations of elaborated and proffessional topics, more work in minor areas, and I absolutely refute any suggestion that this encyclopedia cannot become a truly great source of knowledge respected by every intelligent commmunity alike at a later time. -ZeroTalk 22:34, 10 June 2006 (UTC)

Couldn't find a help contact specific to account creation problems. Found the list of administrators, searched for 'mail' and got your page. Please direct my problem to an appropriate administrator, unless you have a ready answer. The Confirm E-mail page behaves normally and tells me email confirmation was sent, but I do not receive any, and my preferences page shows I am not yet authenticated. Cannot email a user, so here I am. I have tried multiple times for two days. I am sure I have entered my email address correctly. Tried deleting it, logging out, and re-entering it. I even copy-pasted it from my preferences page into a new Microsoft email message and sent it. I received that. Not experiencing other problems, and I have been getting other email. Just as I was telling some of my friends, I'm a terrible replier these days; my work, but mostly, our activity at the Comanche Nation Center is really taking all my time. Just today, I drove all the way to Lawton for one of the most beautiful Pow-wows I have ever attended; I even took some pics just upload them to WP!

Anyway, I simply wanted to thank you wholeheartedly for the beautiful and kind words you had the other day regarding me and my humble contribs. Coming from one the greatest Wikipedians I can think of and a truly wonderful person, it really enlihtened my day. Even more: have you ever felt like butterflies flying inside your stomach, and a knot in your throat, with the feeling your eyes suddenly become moist? Reading your beautiful words gave me all that... and yes, I am very emotional, I know - but it's not everyday someone I look up to tells me what you did. So, just simply thank you, Catherine. Both poetic, and I feel, very apt. I am also an hopelessly addicted editor, though I mostly work at Vicipaedia. I tell the same thing to my students (I teach middle school latin) all the time, check wikipedia, then check every other source that the article suggests for further reading. By the end of every semester, my students are coming up to me telling me about random articles they have researched and I notice them using wikipedia for research in their other classes. I really appreciate it. I'd like to point out more mention of Wikipedia though; I hope it's not old. This is a paper, written by a University of Hong Kong student on Wikipedia a short time ago and is being presented at FM10; It was brought to my attention yesterday. I was expecting it to be included in the Signpost, but it seems to have slipped by. I don't know the policy, if any, the signpost has on editing after "presstime", but you might want to add it to the current issue or include it in the next, assuming it hasn't been previously mentioned. Thanks for all the info, and I'm glad you've added them to you're list. As for letting you know, it's no problem. I'm big fans of all three actors, and I want to make sure they're pages aren't plagued with false information, especially something as controversal and 'labeling' as their sexual orientations.

Hey there, my name is Nick, my username is Potters house and I have encountered a problem with trying to provide any information about Johnny Lee Clary. I have posted this post off to other staff members also. I am not sure if this is the best route to resolve this, but can think of no other way.

The article Johnny Lee Clary has been deleted. I have known Johnny through telephone conversations and email for a short time now (about 3-4 months). He recently came and shared his life story in for our church group for the first time just two weeks ago. Before I met Johnny I became interested in his story i.e. his conversion from the head of the KKK in the US, to being a Christian Minister who now teaches against race hate groups. I found the article Johnny Lee Clary as it still is today, deleted, except for some small talk. If you read the talk you see what I have said at the time (notice I have gotten no reply, probable my fault as I don’t know heaps about WIKI policy). From my understanding Johnny Lee Clary was posting as The KingOfDixie and looks like he tried to change a few things on Wiki concerning the KKK. While this is a controversial subject, Johnny being the former leader of the KKK would probably know a thing or two and be able to contibute, but that’s another story. He eventually made an article about himself i.e. Johnny Lee Clary. Johnny being quite new to Wiki and ignorant of rules of conduct found himself at odds with some admins and had his site deleted.

Whilst observing Johnny over the last 3-4 months I have noticed that he is very outspoken against race hate groups such as the Neo Nazis, Skinheads, KKK etc. This, more often than not, lands Johnny in the hot seat. He has experienced persecution from racist groups for his departure from the KKK and voiced opinions against these racist organizations on his webpage, www.xkkk.org. Johnny has also received multiple death threats.

Because of his bold stance against these racist groups Johnny has become accustomed to hatred directed at him by those same groups. Johnny concluded that perhaps the guy who deleted the page Johnny Lee Clary was a white supremist. I am hoping to clear this up. Before he told me this, I started to create J L Clary, after hearing nothing from posting in user talk on Johnny Lee Clary's article. I wasn't 10 minutes into the J L Clary article when it was issued a deletion notice, and then before I had time to reply (about 5 minutes) it was deleted! I was amazed. I told this to Johnny and he said the main reason he was told that he couldn't have an article was because he was not prominent enough.

Johnny has a very famous testimony and has been on multiple TV shows like Oprah, Donahue, Jerry Springer, etc, and even recently when he preached in our town he made front page news, a double spread on his life, and the local ABC interviewed him live, which is not bad for our town (LISMORE NSW Australia) See http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=John_Kerry&dir=prev&offset=20050327125109&limit=500&action=history .

When David Wilkerson came to our town hardly anyone knew or cared, yet David Wilkerson is allowed an article (and rightfully so), but more people know of Johnny. As to whether he is famous or not, just Google search him and see all the TV interviews and radio interviews he does. He hangs with some of the most prominent Christian leaders in Australia. Besides this, just being the former KKK leader should be enough for an article (he doesn't even get a mention in the KKK one, and would be deleted). He was also a Pro Wrestler. So he is prominent in Christian circles, he is prominent amongst race hate groups, and he is also prominent in the WWE wrestling.

Johnny asked me to test the waters for him to see if he was being persecuted by someone from a race hate group. So I created some sites, John Clary Wade Watts and Operation Colorblind - the name of Johnny's Ministry. These have been fine until yesterday. I cannot understand why these sites are just issued a deletion notice? Just because they mention JLC? I was hoping to discuss these things but they are just deleted. The one on Wade Watts is about a black gospel preacher who was one of the leaders in the civil rights movement in the US and was good friends with Martin Luther King. He took Johnny Clary under his wing and even ordained Johnny as a minister (to this day Johnny is the only white man ordained in the All Black Baptist Church). But his article is up for deletion because I mentioned Clary and had a link.

That is why I am writing to you to see if you can help. It seems to me that the person(s) deleting all articles which even mention Johnny Lee Clary has an agenda. I thought that wikipedia admins had to keep a neutral stance on every article. It seems like this guy has a vendetta against JLC. Why delete the Wade Watts article. That is guilt by association and could be proof that all deletions are because of racial discrimination! I hope this is not the case and would think that it is politically motivated, as Johnny is a strong supporter of George Bush and Antaeus Feldspar of Kerry.

I thank you for reading this long winded post. I have only been using WIKI for about a year myself so I need your help, I don't really know what else to do. I hope you can help. I personally think that Johnny's story is one that is beneficial to the cause of reconciliation between races and to the3 unity of society as a whole. It would be a shame if WIKI became known for having covert racists. Of course I hope that this is a misunderstanding and that all will be cleared up soon.

[edit] question about how to have admin delete duplicate file

You are listed as an admin and may know how this is handled. The Jessie Mae Hemphill image I uploaded in the past was intended to be between 72 dpi and 92 dpi. I got confused and saw my scan said 92 kb and uploaded it but it's causing problems for the photographer, who intended only a smaller file be allowed. If Wikipedia needs a larger one, they should obtain one from someone else, but to use this particular person's photo it should be the smaller resolution. My mistake since I helped do the scan for her. Can someone delete the extra copies? I also messed up and tried to see how the del/rev buttons work but accidentally reverted to an old one once while checking that out. An 80 kb item is up right now but the backup files need deleting to protect the photographer. Or all copies of the photo should be deleted if this can't be done because she does not want a large copy availalbe since people are downloading it and possibly reposting it without a credit. She doesn't want larger res copies out there without people contacting her for one directly.

Do you know how to delete the larger copy in the photo info page? When you go to the photo page, it has a place to delete the larger one but only admins may do this. This is a matter of adhering to what was agreed to by the photographer which was not a large version. It starts to show up places like the news and so forth. Basically the third from the top in the list of revisions at the bottom of the info page is the right one and the bottom (large) one is the wrong one; the top two are extraneous. The one we have and use should be the 80 dpi file and no other. Let me know what to do. I don't want this sitting out this way any longer, exposing the photographer to problems. We can get a different, larger image by some other photographer if we need a large one but if we want to use this one we need to delete the older versions that are large.
