[edit] Risorgimento

The Italian Unification, or Risorgimento, was opposed by Pope Pius IX because he feared it would result in persecution of Italian Catholics.[1] Prominent Italian nationalists who were Freemasons included Giuseppe Garibaldi,[2] Camillo di Cavour[3] and Giuseppe Mazzini[3]

The risorgimento ended with the dispossession of the Papal States in 1870.
