[edit] Etymology
Looking around, the folk origin for catassing is that it came from a newspaper or some other printed source. [1] Also, it might have been first popularized within the Lum the Mad community. [2] After some googling, I think I have found evidence to confirm this etymology:
From the June 1-7, 2000 issue of Metro, Silicon Valley's Weekly Newspaper: "The Surreal World" [3]
- "TYSON MET ME at the door but said little. Inside his dark and foul apartment, I was met by the distinct pungency of cat urine."
- "I had no choice but to return to Tyson's Den of Cat Ass and Murdered Time."
June 2, 2000 - A link to that article posted on Lum the Mad (under "MY HOUSE DOESN'T SMELL LIKE CAT ASS")
June 8, 2000 - rec.games.computer.ultima.online post by Dundee (Jeff Freeman) [4]
- "Does your house smell like cat ass?"
August 2000 - alt.games.everquest post that uses "cat ass" in this context re EQ [5]
- "What do you smell like? a) Rotting fish. b) A week old corpse. c) Dog shit. Cat ass."
September 2000 - comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.rpg post that uses "cat ass" in this context re EQ [6]
- "can be quite addictive so hopefully you have enough willpower if you start playing not to become an addict and let your house start smelling like cat ass while you neglect all real life responsibilities and committments"
The earliest references I found on Slashdot are from 2004. I haven't found it used in this context pre-June 2000 (note that "cat's ass" isn't the same thing usually). I'm going to update the article with what I've found. --Mrwojo 23:42, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Suggestions
Is anyone watching this article? Guild Wars is a MMORPG with no monthly fees. This should be mentioned as another tactic that some publishers are using to discourage catassing. If you aren't paying a monthly fee, you don't feel like you are wasting your cash when you don't play. Jrdepriest 00:26, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

I don't see as any court could find the MMORPG company liable if a gamer neglects him/herself or his/her family, any more than thet could find the liquor store responsible if someone drives drunk on their products. NeonMerlin 02:58, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
