CAT1-X Hyperion Gundam series

This article is about a fictional weapon from the Cosmic Era of the anime Gundam metaseries.

In mid CE 71, the Earth Alliance's Eurasian Federation creates three of its own advanced prototype mobile suits; separate from the EA's GAT-X series. These are the CAT1-X1/3 Hyperion Unit 1, CAT1-X2/3 Hyperion Unit 2, and CAT1-X3/3 Hyperion Unit 3. The three units are identical except for the color scheme on Unit 1 differing from its brethren and the shoulder insignia added to Unit 2 that distinguishes it from Unit 3.

The Hyperion series is armed with a "Zastava Stigmate" beam sub-machine gun. While its shots were weaker than those of standard beam rifles, its rate of fire was much greater. The units also come with 5 "Romteknica" beam knives (one stored on each limb and one mounted as a bayonet on the submachinegun). In addition, the Hyperion units carry two head-mounted CIWS guns and a pair of "Forfanterie" beam cannons on their backpacks, which fold over the shoulders in use.

Their main feature, however, is the "Armure Lumiere" mono-phase lightwave shield system. This system consists of 7 emitters, one on each arm and 5 on the backpack. The emitters generate triangular beam shields while the backpack-mounted units could also project an energy globe similar to the "Umbrella of Artemis". This completely surrounds the mobile suit, protecting it from any attacks, but it drains the Hyperion’s battery reactor in approximately 5 minutes. The beam sub-machine gun as well as the "Forfanterie" cannons could fire through the barrier allowing the suit’s pilot to take refuge within the barrier while still attacking the enemy. The shield emitters can be configured to focus the lightwaves into large, triangular, beam saber-like weapons which could then be used to penetrate other lightwave shields. It should be noted that the emitters are actually vulnerable to attack regardless of the shield itself being active. In order to devote all necessary power the Armure Lumière barrier (when activated) all of the beam weapons (i.e. beam sub-machine gun, beam knives and beam cannons) used by the Hyperion units are powered by their own individual power cells.

The Hyperion series uses a modified General Unilateral Neuro - Link Dispersive Autonomic Maneuver operating system.

Hyperion Unit 1 is assigned to Canard Pars, a Coordinator born in the same "Ultimate Coordinator" project that produced Kira Yamato, but rejected as a failure. With the Hyperion, he takes on the task of finding and killing Kira. During his quest he learns that ZAFT has manufactured Neutron Jammer Canceller technology. Canard is determined to upgrade the Hyperion Unit 1 with nuclear power, eliminating any time constraints on its beam barrier. He fights several battles against Prayer Reverie of the Junk Guild who pilots the YMF-X000A Dreadnought, the very suit that was the source of Canard's knowledge of the existence of the N-Jammer Canceller.

At one point, Canard, more or less, deserts the Eurasian Federation to "finish his mission" and sorties his heavily damaged Hyperion Unit 1 against Unit 2. Using the beam shield as a weapon, he disables Unit 2 and then kills its pilot, Balsam Arendo. After this battle Canard increases his unit's firepower by stealing Unit 2's beam sub-machine gun and proceeds to use the suit itself as a source of parts for repair.

Eventually Canard steals a N-Jammer Canceller from the Ptolemaeus Moon Base and after installing it and a nuclear reactor, dubs his upgraded mobile suit the "Super Hyperion". Aside from doing away with the time limit on the "Armure Lumiere", the reactor can be connected, via cables, to any of the Unit 1's weapons granting them unlimited use as well. However, as there were only two cables, only two weapons can be powered by the reactor at a time. None of this had any effect on the lightwave shield system as it was always connected to the reactor.

The Hyperion Unit 1 is destroyed during a battle with Prayer and the Dreadnought. Canard overloads the nuclear reactor by firing a full-powered blast from his "Forfanterie" beam cannons in an attempt to break out of a beam barrier produced by the Dreadnought's DRAGOONs. Canard survives however, as he escapes the cockpit and Prayer uses the Dreadnought to shield him.

Hyperion Gundam Unit 3 was assigned to the space fortress Artemis under the command of Gerard Garcia. It was heavily damaged in a battle with Serpent Tail mercenary Gai Murakumo's MBF-P03 Gundam Astray Blue Frame 2nd L when Gai accidentally discovered that the anti-beam coating on his Tactical Arms blade allowed it to penetrate the "Armure Lumiere" lightwave barrier. Afterward, the Junk Guild acquires Unit 3 and repairs it, handing it over to Ivan Zamboise, who fights on behalf of those in Western Eurasia who want freedom from the Alliance.
