Castlemaine (Irish: Casleán na Mainge) is a small town between major towns Tralee and Killarney in the county of Kerry, in the Munster province of the Republic of Ireland. It is located near Milltown.
In a June 1921 IRA ambush near Castlemaine, during the Irish War of Independence, four security-force members were killed.
Pat Carey, TD was born in Castlemaine.
'The Wild Colonial Boy' according to the song of the same name 'was born and reared in Ireland, in a place called Castlemaine....Jack Duggan was his name...'The song may be based on the career of Jack Donahue. Jack Donohue was a criminal who was transported to Australia. He escaped and resumed a life of crime, but was eventually captured and shot in 1830.
