Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse is a video game released for the Mega Drive/Genesis produced by Sega of America. It was one of the first games for the platform and sealed the reputation of Sega of being able to take popular Walt Disney characters and transform them into popular video games that helped make their system a viable competitor to Nintendo.
The game is a side-scrolling game were you control Mickey Mouse on a magical quest to save Minnie Mouse from an evil wicked witch. Each level exists within a large magical castle and you defeated enemies and bosses by jumping and stomp-butting on them, or collecting apples, or marbles to use as projectives. You could also collect icons to increase your health, get extra lives, or more bonus points.
After you defeated a boss, you were given a gem. When you collected all seven gems you built a rainbow bridge that allowed you to walk into the castle's tower for a final battle with the wicked witch.
Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse was also released for the Game Gear and Sega Master System with redesigned levels, though the game mechanics are similar from the Genesis/Mega Drive version.
A gag existed in each game whereby all the game's endings would eventually return to a similar movie screen curtain coming down, with Disney characters sitting in the audience as was first seen in Castle of Illusion.
