Castell (Germany)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is about the German County of Castell. For the human towers of this name, see Castell.

Castell was a County of northern Bavaria, Germany, ruling a string of territories in the historical region of Franconia, both east and west of Würzburg. We possess very limited information on the Castell family. However, we know that they were the counts of Kreis Gerolzhofen, Reigierungsbezirk, and Unterfranken of Bavaria. The family was Grafschaft and was also on the personal list of the Reichsadel. They were a member of the Fraenkische Grafenkolleg. The two main branches of the Castell Family were:1) Castell-Castell who were Protestant and 2) Castell-Ruedenhausen with both Protestant and Catholic members.

Castell was composed of three territories and 28 villages (Flecken). Grafschaft Castell held a tenancy subject to Wuerttemberg. The fief joined Bavaria (1901).
