Cassie (Animorphs)

Cassie is a fictional character from the sci-fi book series Animorphs. She is African American. Her last name is never mentioned. She says at one point that it's sort of a nice last name.

Cassie is an Animorph. She lives on a farm, and her father Walter runs the Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic out of their barn. Her mother Michelle is a vet at the Gardens, a local zoo/amusement park. Before the war, she had hopes of becoming a veterinarian. The Animorphs meet primarily in Cassie's barn.

She's the moralist of the group and often worries, much more than some of the others, about the costs of the war. This had led Cassie to many dangerous and sometimes hypocritical actions -- she, along with a Yeerk named Aftran, end up forming the Yeerk Peace Movement (composed of Yeerks who have a peaceful alliance with their human hosts). But this attitude also leads her to make, quite possibly, the most dangerous choice in the war -- she lets Tom take the Escafil device in order to stop Jake from having to kill his own brother, even though it meant their enemies would gain the ability to morph in the process (This decision is one of the factors that ended the war with the Yeerks).

She is perceptive and often is aware of other's motives and feelings, sometimes even before they are. This develops into an ability to manipulate her enemies and allies as well as anticipate their actions, most notably with the Animorphs' traitor, David. Many of the other Animorphs also come to Cassie for comfort or advice, thanks to her empathetic nature. (Though, often, she gives them her advice whether they like it or not.)

She is also a natural estreen, meaning she is better able to control her morphing. Estreens make morphing seem almost like dancing, as the other Animorphs and Ax agree. (In Andalite culture, estreens can make a career out of their talent). She is best friends with Rachel, even though they are completely opposite, and likes Jake. The two are somewhat romantically involved during the series, but end up parting ways.

Also, in the book "Back to Before," the Drode and the Ellimist make a deal, in which Jake chooses to avoid the entire war, never meeting Elfangor or receiving the morphing power. However, this reality eventually falls apart, as Cassie can see "outside the box" to other realities, including the real one. It is revealed in this book that the Animorphs were unknowingly brought together by the Ellimist, as part of the intergalactic game. The Drode accuses that the Ellimist "stacked the deck." The supposedly random group of humans contains "the freak of nature (Cassie, an anomaly), Visser One's host's son (Marco), Elfangor's brother (Ax), and Elfangor's time-lost son (Tobias)." From there the Ellimist added two other humans with strong traits of leadership, confidence, and fierce bravery to lead the pack; cousins Jake and Rachel. After the alternate reality collapses, Cassie is the only one to remember the incident, albeit dimly.

After the war, Cassie probably leads the most successful life after Marco, becoming something of an activist working for the free Hork-Bajir, along with her friend and love interest Ronnie Chambers. She is the only Animorph who does not go to save Ax -- but only on Jake's insistence that she not do so. At the end of the series Cassie is the only Animorph remaining on Earth.

• Michelle is Cassie's mother and the head veterinarian of The Gardens. Cassie uses her connections (as the daughter of the head vet) for the Animorphs to acquire their initial battle morphs and later some other morphs.
• Walter is Cassie's father who stays at home and runs the Rehabilitation Clinic in the barn. He uses a truck to make rounds through the forests, picking up injured animals. His truck is later destroyed in MegaMorphs #1 as the Animorphs attempt to outrun the Veleek

• Cassie mentions in book 37, The Weakness (chapter 8, page 47), that she has a niece. This indicates that she has an older sibling. Alternatively, the "niece" could be the daughter of an older cousin.

Cassie's favored battle morph is the wolf. Her favored aerial morph is the osprey.

In 1999 three different Transformers toys of Cassie were made. The larger one sold in stores turned into a wolf, and the smaller one part of a Taco Bell children's meal promotion, turned into an anteater. She was also a part of the set of combiner animorphs which turned into a dinosaur.
