[edit] Halifax casino

The Casino Nova Scotia opened a temporary location in the Sheraton Hotel Halifax in June 1, 1995. On April 24, 2000 it moved to a brand new, $100-million, "Vegas-style" facility on the downtown Halifax waterfront. It was originally owned by Caesar's.

The casino has over 750 slots and table games. Large reception and concert rooms are also located in the main building. There is an attached 550-car parkade, including 14 wheelchair-accessible spaces.

The casino is connected by pedway to the Marriott Halifax Harbourfront, formerly the Casino Nova Scotia Hotel and Sheraton Hotel Halifax. The pedway also connects to Purdy's Wharf, Scotia Square, and the downtown core.

Guests to the casino must be at least 19 years of age, and must carry a government-issued piece of photo identification.

Casino Nova Scotia is a smoke-free facility (since Dec 1, 2006).

As of October 2005, Casino Nova Scotia was bought out by Great Canadian Gaming Corporation.

[edit] Slots

Patrons using slot machines are now given bar-coded paper tickets (known as "ticket in/ticket out" machines) instead of coins or tokens. These tickets can be cashed at the Casino cage or transferred to another slot machine at anytime.

  • Over 750 slot machines — video slot machines and reel slot machines
  • All machines accept Canadian paper currency
  • Denominations range from ($0.01 to $100) machines

[edit] Game selection

Lucky Ladies Bonus In the Fall of 2006 Casino Nova Scotia replaced it's two (2) Progressive Blackjack Tables with Lucky Ladies Bonus Play on all of it's Blackjack Tables. Lucky Ladies is an optional wager that can be placed prior to the dealing of cards to the players every hand. The wager amount range is $1 - 25 (excluding the use of $2.50 chips). The Lucky Ladies wager is a bet, by the player, that the first two cards dealt to them will total 20.

The payouts are as follows: Any 2 cards equal to 20 (i.e. Jack of Clubs & 10 of Diamonds) will be paid 4-1. Any 2 suited cards equal to 20 (i.e. Ace of Spades & Nine of Spades) will be paid 9-1. Any two matched cards equal to 20 (i.e. Jack of Clubs & Jack of Clubs) will be paid 19-1. If the player is dealt two Queen's of Hearts the payout is 125-1. If the Player is dealt two Queen's of Hearts and the dealer has Blackjack the payout is 1000-1.

The determination of the outcome of the Lucky Ladies wager (win/loss) is completed prior to the finishing of the dealing of the Blackjack hand and any payout is not affected by the outcome of the Blackjack hand.

[edit] Java Jazz

Java Jazz opened in the Summer of 2006 and is located in the front lobby of the Casino on the main floor. The structure is that of a cafe, having a single counter where customers can order and purchase their food. Smaller quantities of food are usually the norm (pizza slices, muffins, salad, coffee) rather than full course meals. Several small tables are situated throughout the lobby for customers to enjoy food and beverage, however the structure is strictly casual and tables are first-come, first-served.

[edit] Harbourfront Lounge

The only designated smoking section in Casino Nova Scotia. The lounge has TVs, numerous slot machines, and a full length bar.

As of December 31 2006, smoking will be banned in all public establishments in the Halifax area, therefore the Harbourfront Lounge will no longer be a designated smoking area for guests begining December 1 2006.

Opened in June of 2006, the facility offers free live entertainment on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays to all those on the Casino floor. The facility has numerous slot machines and lounge tables accessible to those on the gaming floor, all of which are setup to focus on the main stage in the centre of the room.

The facility is rumoured to be a temporary solution until it is merged with the Harbourfront Lounge during or after the renovations scheduled for 2007. The renovations will make way for a proper sized stage and lounge area.

[edit] Cage services

The cage is available at all times when the Casino is open. There are 6 front windows — the number of windows open depend on the business demand.

[edit] Accepted foreign currencies

The cage will exchange foreign currencies for Cdn$ at about 1-2% below official exchange rates. However, so long as you keep your stub, the cage will exchange Cdn$ back to the original foreign currency at the same rate. Winnings in excess of the original amount exchanged will also be included.

[edit] ATM services

Casino Nova Scotia has three ATMs available on the gaming floor and one at the pedway entrance. The machines located on the upper level, closest to the main cage and near the entertainment lounge dispense $20 Canadian bills. the machine located nearest the High Limit Room dispenses $50 Canadian bills. There is a $1.50 charge for debit transactions ATMs also do credit card withdrawls from American Express, MasterCard, Visa, Maestro, Cirrus, and PLUS.

  • U.S. and foreign currency exchange (5 currencies)
  • Sale and Redemption of Casino Nova Scotia Gift Certificates
  • Redemption of Casino Token Coupons

[edit] Credit card services

There is a service fee of 2.5% applied to all credit card transactions. This fee is never waived.

[edit] Casino Hotel

The casino itself currently doesn't have any affiliation with a hotel nor does it own one.

[edit] Structural engineering

Engineered by the team at BMR, it has been described as one of the most complicated in BMR history. The size of the site meant that part of the building was built over water 70 feet deep at its deepest point. Most of the land that the Casino occupies had been created years earlier when that part of the Halifax Harbour was infilled with loose rock and excavation material from other construction sites — reclaimed land was too soft to serve as a stable building foundation. BMR overcame the problem by engineering a design which incorporated driving caissons through the fill material and into the firm bedrock below. Then, using a specially designed doughnut-shaped pile cap as a support system, BMR worked with the form work contractor to hang the casino’s floor structure on the supporting caissons, like a huge wharf.

BMR then designed a floor system which supported several layers of insulation sandwiched between layers of heating slabs. The floor had to be especially strong to support the heavy carts, known as mules, that travel between slot machines to collect change. The floor also contained wiring ducts to allow all the casino’s slot machines to be connected to a main control panel. [1]
