Talk:Carcinoid syndrome

I think that you should change the survival times--I was told that by a doctor at the Mayo Clinic in 2000 that the median survival from diagnosis was 7 years. If you check the online support groups you will hear of people surviving more than 20 years after diagnosis of liver metastases and onset of symptoms. --216.137.70.192 08:54, 7 January 2006. The initial lines are also innaccurate - they state that carcinoid tumours occur in the G.I. tract but in fact they can also occur elsewhere e.g. the lung and even other organs. A very good source of information is www.carcinoid.org or www.netumoradvisor.org
There are inaccuracies in the pathophysiology section. Carcinoid tumors commonly make serotonin but not histamine or catecholamines. The vasoactive manifestations, most notably the flushing, result fromsecretion of kallekrein, the enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of kininogen to lysyl-bradykinin. The latter is further converted to bradykinin, one of the most powerful vasodilators known. Bradykinin, not serotonin, is the cause of the flushing.--BobL 18:36, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
