In the fictional universe of the Deryni novels of Katherine Kurtz, Carthmoor is a duchy located in the extreme southeastern portion of the Kingdom of Gwynedd. It is a successor state to the former Kingdom of Mooryn, and is the traditional title of the second sons of the Kings of Gwynedd.

[edit] Geography
Carthmoor lies in the far southeastern region of Gwynedd, bordered to the north by the Earldom of Carthane and the Crown Duchy of Haldane. The Duchy of Corwyn and a collection of smaller earldoms and baronies lie to the east, and Carthmoor's western border is occupied by the Kingdom of Llannedd. The Kingdoms of Bremagne and Fallon stand to the south, separated from Carthmoor by the Southern Sea.
[edit] History
The lands of the Duchy of Carthmoor were originally part of the Kingdom of Mooryn. In 826, King Festil I Furstán acquired large stretches of land in Mooryn upon the marriage of his son, Prince Festil II, to the Lady Brionne, the Heiress of Mooryn. From these lands, Festil I created the Duchies of Carthmoor and Corwyn, and he created his son Festil II as Duke of Carthmoor that same year. The last King of Mooryn died in 833, leaving the claim to the throne to his daughter, who then died in 835. Upon Brionne's death, the Kingdom of Mooryn was officially dissolved and its lands annexed by Gwynedd, leaving in its place the Duchy of Carthmoor, the Duchy of Corwyn, and several lesser estates.
The title to Carthmoor descended through several branches of the Furstán-Festil family, eventually passing to Bogdan Furstán-Festil, the younger son of King Festil III Furstán-Festil. After the Haldane Restoration in 904, King Cinhil I Haldane permitted Bogdan to retain the title of Duke of Carthmoor because Bogdan had no right to the Festillic claim to the throne of Gwynedd. However, Bogdan's son, Duke Rudolf II, was removed from the duchy by the Regents of King Alroy Haldane on December 27, 917. King Alroy then bestowed the duchy upon his youngest brother, Prince Rhys Michael Haldane.
Over the years, the title of Duke of Carthmoor has become the traditional title of the second sons of the Kings of Gwynedd. It is passed through the male line only, but has very rarely been passed directly from father to son since the Haldane Restoration. During those times when there is no second son to hold the title, it has served as a secondary title for the king himself.
