From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Carlton Le Moorland is a small village between Newark on Trent and Lincoln. It has a Tudor church and a population of approximately 400. nearest adjacent villages are Norton Disney, Brant Broughton and Bassingham.
The village is mentioned in the Doomsday book. The "Le" in the name seems to have been added quite recently as the references at the Lincolnshire Archives quote the use of "in".
The Knights Templar and a monastic order owned lands in and around the parish in the Middle Ages. Eventually the Disney family who had the their main branch of the family in Norton Disney took ownership of estates with the ending of the monastic holdings locally in the 16th century. There are Disney family members buried in the parish church of St Marys.
There is a map of the parish in the 17th century held at the Middleton Collection at Hull University.
The parish also had a unique wooden post mill which blew down in the 1930s.
