Carlisle is a city in Nicholas County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,917 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Nicholas CountyGR6.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.3 km² (1.3 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 1,917 people, 887 households, and 542 families residing in the city. The population density was 578.2/km² (1,499.7/mi²). There were 982 housing units at an average density of 296.2/km² (768.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.50% White, 2.19% African American, 0.10% Asian, 0.10% from other races, and 0.10% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.52% of the population.

There were 887 households out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.8% were married couples living together, 11.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.8% were non-families. 36.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.16 and the average family size was 2.78.

In the city the population was spread out with 20.9% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 24.0% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 22.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 81.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $29,199, and the median income for a family was $35,769. Males had a median income of $30,479 versus $19,167 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,485. About 8.1% of families and 11.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.1% of those under age 18 and 14.1% of those age 65 or over.
