Carl Gotthelf Immanuel Friedlaender

Carl Gotthelf Immanuel Friedländer (b. 23 May 1905, Naples?, d. 3 November 1991, Westport, Canada) was a Swiss and Canadian Geologist.

Carl grew up in Naples (Italy), his father was Immanuel Friedländer, a prominent German volcanologist in Switzerland and Italy. His mother was Herta Friedländer née Meyer (1876-1958), the sister of the Austrian physicist Stefan Meyer (1872-1949), whose maternal uncle was the crystallographer Victor Mordechai Goldschmidt (1853-1933) in Heidelberg. He had a younger sister Olga who also attended University in Zürich. Carl was married first to Margaret Rhonheimer (1920-1952), and later to Alba Paganini.

He studied Geology in Switzerland at the University of Zürich and the ETH Zürich, receiving his Dr.phil.II with a dissertation on the ore deposits of the Bündner Oberland in Switzerland. He first continued research at ETH Zürich but later became professor and department chair from 1957-1969 at Dalhousie University in Canada.
