Bush plum, is an Australian native plant. It's scientific name is Carissa lanceolata.
Bush plum is a bush tucker food for Aborigines. It grows at the foot of hills and in floodout areas all over Central Australia. The fruit is dark, and the flowers are small and white. The fruit hangs from the branches of the tree. The berries are red to dark purple and very sweet when ripe, with small seeds. It is still commonly eaten in the desert today.
It's name in the Arrernte language of Central Australia is Merne arrankweye for the fruit, which are called conkerberries in English. The Anmatyerr call it anwekety. The tree is more prolific in the northern part of Arrernte country, around Alice Springs, and the Arrernte believe this is where they came from in the Dreaming. It also grows more in the east. Aborigines do not chew them, just swallow them.
Bush plum is also a popular food for emus and bush turkeys and many other birds in the area.
