[edit] Port of Cariño
[edit] Climate and Geography
- Owing to its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, Cariño does not experience extreme variations in its weather conditions in winter nor in summer. The weather is mild all the year around and that is very different to what happens in other parts of the Iberian Peninsula. Like the rest of Galicia, it is rainy and beautifully green and the summers tend to be a bit dryer than the winters.
- Cariño and Cedeira´s shared coast has some of the highest cliffs in Europe; but a not so well known fact about them till recent studies, is that those cliffs are made out of some of the oldest rocks in the continent. In fact, some scientists working for the British Natural History Museum have just published (2006) in the Official Journal of the Royal Geological Society, that those rocks are about 1,160 million years old (i.e.: the only places in the world where rocks of similar age can be found are South Africa, Canada and Australia).
[edit] Parishes
The borough can be divided into several parishes, also known as "Parroquias", which differ from each other in extension, population density, economic activities and levels of development.
[edit] History and Tourism
[edit] Late 20th century and early 21st century
- During the last two decades or so, Cariño has been making efforts to re-invent itself as an attractive coastal resort following the successful example of nearby Cedeira, with some degrees of success. One of the projects includes a 1.7 Km coastal front promenade.
- From 2006, Cariño City Council has started to operate some (specially adapted for educational purposes) fishing trawlers, to enable visitors to discover Cariño’s beautiful coast from a different perspective.
[edit] World War II
The Following German U-Boats have been reported as sunk somewhere near the fishing port of Carino Coast of El Ortegal:
- Unterseeboot 504 Sunk at 1543hrs on 30 July 1943 in the North Atlantic north-west of Cape Ortegal, Spain. 53 dead (all hands lost).
- Unterseeboot 508 Sunk 12 Nov 1943 in the Bay of Biscay north of Cape Ortegal, Spain. 57 dead (all hands lost).
[edit] Industry
- Farming and timber production are important sectors in the borough though not as much as Fishing. Trawlers from Cariño travel across the world to distant places like South Africa, Terra Nova in Canada or the Irish Box to get tons of fish. Most of the fish, specially tuna is putted in tin-cans in warehouses locally for later being distributed to different parts of Spain and Europe.
- In the “Sierra da Capelada” horse breeding is particularly important, and in the Summer Season they celebrate an interesting festivity “A Rapa das Bestas” where the newly born horses are marked and have their hair cut. The whole festivity is open to all visitors.
- Wind-mill parks are common in Ferrolterra particularly in the boroughs of Cariño, Cedeira and A Capela.
