Europe is leading in smart card technology. In several European countries developments for cards in routine use are ongoing. In order to combine the efforts, to advance standardisation and compatibility the eEurope Smart Card Charter was founded and sponsored by the EC until 2002. At that time it became evident that smart card technology is mature and will be used in several applications. The introduction of the EHIC- European Health Insurance Card was decided on. Several EC countries have started to develop a complex health card for patients and a health professional card. Different projects are executed or proposed on a European level.

EFMI WG CARDS home pageaims at being a European competence centre to watch ongoing activities and to provide knowledge to policy makers and architect designers involved in the deployment of card related projects in the field of the healthcare sector.

Three basic sectors are to be addressed:
- Card oriented competence and know-how (incl. infrastructure)
- Vision of smart token technology applications
- Marketing, dissemination and deployment of WG ideas and results
The EFMI WG CARDS will contribute to research and development. It will use Wikipedia as a tool to publish its results.
