[edit] Indroduction
Cardinal Dougherty High School located in the Olney [1] section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Cardinal Dougherty or simply Dougherty, opened in 1956 and is now celbrating 50 years of catholic education. The School is named after Dennis Joseph Dougherty (1865-1951), Archbishop of Philadelphia (1918-1951).
[edit] Philosophy
Cardinal Dougherty High School, as part of the school system of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, enrolls students of diverse ethnic, racial, and religious backgrounds from urban and suburban areas. Having participated in the history and tradition of the Church in Philadelphia for fifty years, Cardinal Dougherty High School continues to embrace the four fold mission of Catholic education as expressed by the bishops of the United States: to teach, to serve, to build community and to worship.
[edit] Intensive Scheduling
In 1994, Cardinal Dougherty High School became the first Archdiocesan High School to participate in the Educational Reform Movement that is popular in this country by adopting the Intensive Scheduling model for its school day.
A school day in an Intensively Scheduled school consists of four 80 to 85 minute classes, and a separate 40 minute lunch period. Students in an IS school take only three or four classes at a time, and earn one credit for each class studied for one term, i.e., from September to January, or from January to June.
[edit] Alma Mater
With faith that’s strong, With courage bold, We wave our colors high, Unfurl our banner to the world, Our cross against the sky; For in this sign we conquer all, For God and school and land, With the Trinity and Mary’s love, To guide our youthful hands.
Chorus: Alma Mater’s garnet and royal gold, Sons and daughters salute you with pride; Pledging hearts to you in loyalty We’ll bear your glory far and wide! With wisdom and truth you nourish us, With love our souls you fortify; So dear Alma Mater, Your sons and daughters hail! We hail Cardinal Dougherty High!
[edit] Our Lady of Confidence
In 1955 Archbishop John Francis O’Hara, C.S.C. wishing to provide an all day program for children who were mentally challenged and developmentally delayed, founded Our Lady of Confidence Day School and placed it under the supervision of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Chestnut Hill, PA. For forty-three years the program was located on the grounds of Little Flower High School in the Hunting Park section of the city.
In the Fall of 1998 under the direction and leadership of Sr. Francis Christi, S.S.J. the OLC program was moved from its original site to two new locations. The 5 through 14 year old students were moved into vacant classrooms at St. David Parish school in Willow Grove, while the 15 to 21 year old students were re-located in Cardinal Dougherty High School.
Utilizing four classrooms and the former Home Economics lab, approximately fifty special education students continue to benefit from integration into the total Dougherty community. With a principal (dividing herself between the two sites), three teachers, three full time aides, and part-time speech, occupational, and job coach therapists, the OLC program has quickly become an integral part of daily life at Cardinal Dougherty.
Using the national model of the Best Buddies Program, Dougherty students have formed a local chapter wherein CD students and OLC students are paired together to work, socialize, and share school experiences.
