Captain Olimar is the fictional main character in the Pikmin series of video games. He hails from the distant planet Hocotate, where he is one of the most well known spacemen currently residing there. Captain Olimar is only about the size of a quarter, or about the size of a fifty pence piece. He cannot breathe oxygen, as it is poisonous to him.
Captain Olimar's log states that his favorite food is Pikpik Carrots. His wife made a soup of them for his last meal before the voyage that began the first Pikmin game. He named the Pikmin after the carrots, due to their similar appearance and the fact that they, like the carrots, come in red, yellow, and blue varieties.
Captain Olimar has a family on Hocotate, consisting of his aforementioned wife, a son, a daughter, and a dog (which he names the Bulborbs after).

[edit] Pikmin Series
[edit] Pikmin
In Pikmin, Captain Olimar's spaceship, The Dolphin, is hit by a meteorite and crash-lands onto a strange, unknown planet that resembles Earth. Discovering the Pikmin, he enlists their help in an attempt to retrieve the scattered parts of his spaceship so he can return home. Unfortunately, he has only thirty days in which to do so, as the air supply in his spacesuit is limited, and he cannot breathe the planet's oxygen-containing atmosphere. Further complicating matters, the Pikmin must retreat to their homes at dusk, or be eaten by their numerous predators.
[edit] Pikmin 2
In Pikmin 2, Olimar and his assistant, Louie, are ordered by their employer, the Hocotate Freight Company, to return to the planet to find treasures to sell, in order to get the Hocotate Freight Company out of debt. When they land on the planet, they once again team up with the Red, Yellow, and Blue Pikmin, and discover two new colors of Pikmin, White and Purple. Louie's name is derived from the name of Luigi, as "Olimar" is from "Mario".
[edit] Other games
Captain Olimar was apparently set to make a cameo in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. In place of all of the Professor E. Gadd appearances, Captain Olimar was set to come in and taste the player's coffee. He spoke like he does in his log books. However, this never actually occurred, and Professor Gadd became the official Taste Tester.
[edit] Super Smash Bros. Melee
The video game Super Smash Bros. Melee checks for the presence of a Pikmin game saved onto the same memory card it uses for its own save file. If it finds one, it presents the player with a trophy of Captain Olimar.
